Beowulf
Beowulf | Santiago García

BEOWULF HC SANTIAGO GARCIA and DAVID RUBIN unite to bring forward the myth of Beowulf, which has endured for a thousand years and inspired an epic poem of the same name, became a foundational piece of English literature, and inspired generations of authors, from Tolkien to a good number of Hollywood screenwriters. BEOWULF tells of the tale of a Scandinavian hero in lands that would become what is now Denmark and Sweden: A monster, Grendel, has arrived in the kingdom of the Danes, devouring its men and women for 12 years until Beowulf arrives to save them. GARCIA and RUBIN faithfully follow the original story for a new version that is neither revisionist nor postmodern, but captures the tone and important details of the poem, translating its potent, epic resonance and melancholy into a contemporary comic that isn't standard swords and sorcery or heroic fantasy fare, but rather an ancient story with a modern perspective that remains respectful of the source material.

Mehso-so

I am a fan of all things Beowulf. I have enjoyed Beowulf in all of his varieties and versions, obviously some more than others. While I enjoyed the dizzying artwork of this graphic novel, I felt much of the story was a bit rushed. I am sure it is a very difficult task to translate Beowulf into a graphic novel fit for mass consumption, but I felt some of the finer points that made Beowulf so interesting to me were missing in this version.

Pickpick

Violence is prominent in this #graphicnovel rendition of a classic epic: even panels that show Beowulf eating cherries look gory. A large part of the brutal tale is carried visually, and that part is fine, in fact it is the reason I am calling this a pick, but I would have preferred more poetic language in the passages with text. Yes, it‘s a man-against-monster adventure, but still I want nuance. (Scroll for more of my comments under the title.)

Another sharp departure from the familiar version: Beowulf is mighty pissed at Unferth for giving him his family‘s sword, Hrunting, because it was of no use against the mother monster. “It failed. Like you.â€

Sometimes I can‘t tell what‘s going on. Is the mother of Grendel using her talons to pop packing bubbles in that top panel??? It‘s creepy, regardless, which is the right mood for this scene in the forest.

This #graphicnovel has an oversized format which adds even more impact to the art.

These panels are part of a passage where Grendel sexually assaults Beowulf—a departure from the classic text that I haven‘t encountered before. The panels fall within a 26-page stretch that is wordless except for onomatopoeia.

I love the story of Beowulf; it has fascinated me since I was still too young to understand either its violence or its glory. This graphic rendition is disturbing, dark, beautifully drawn, and true to the spirit of the original ballad and also showed me new corners and ways of seeing a tale that is as familiar to me as my heartbeat.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I am probably gonna own this. 6y
8leagueboot @TobeyTheScavengerMonk it is worth the investment! It‘s also hard to tell in the pic, but it‘s an oversized graphic novel. The color work alone is just 😠6y
