(Anyone else have those little houses as a kid?)
There's two novellas here, bookending a collection of short stories, a couple of which surprised me by being a tad woman's magazine-ish. Let's face it, I don't suppose anyone goes to Lionel Shriver for feel-goods and uplift. None of her characters is revealed by her critical eye to be a shining paragon of humanity: everyone's a bit crap, really. Sharp, incisive, just shy of merciless, it's good.
#bookspin #doublespin complete! @TheAromaofBooks it took me a while to get back into Shriver's writing style as it's very dense, and being thrown straight into a novella was a little heavy, but I really enjoyed this short story collection, a very interesting theme looking at different kinds of property and how they are viewed by different people. Now trying to decide if I'm going to give #bookspinbingo a whirl!
The real test of lovers wasn't how they dealt with illness, whether they were "supportive" or sexually faithful; you discovered what people were made of only once on the pointy end of how they handled money.
“There‘s nothing upsetting about being judged if it turns out that everyone thinks you‘re wonderful.”
What a colossal waste of time! I‘m giving it 2 stars ⭐️ because the writing itself is amazing. Her ability to write beautifully is a pleasure. However each of these stories were pointless, dull and who the hell cares! I want my short stories to have a point!
I keep trying to find good short stories and come up dissatisfied.
Rave reviews are in for PROPERTY, #LionelShriver‘s collection of “stories between 2 novellas” from literary greats like #RuthFranklin, #MichikoKakutani, and #RonCharles, who says “if has her finger on the zeitgeist, Shriver has her hands around its throat.” #Property is on sale now, available wherever books are sold!

I hate to DNF when I'm halfway through, but I'm slogging. I can't pinpoint exactly what feels off, but it's strong enough that I'm setting this one aside.
