Swimming Between Worlds
Swimming Between Worlds | Elaine Neil Orr
9 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
From the critically acclaimed writer of A Different Sun, a Southern coming-of-age novel that sets three very different young people against the tumultuous years of the American civil rights movement... Tacker Hart left his home in North Carolina as a local high school football hero, but returns in disgrace after being fired from a prestigious architectural assignment in West Africa. Yet the culture and people he grew to admire have left their mark on him. Adrift, he manages his father's grocery store and becomes reacquainted with a girl he barely knew growing up. Kate Monroe's parents have died, leaving her the family home and the right connections in her Southern town. But a trove of disturbing letters sends her searching for the truth behind the comfortable life she's been bequeathed. On the same morning but at different moments, Tacker and Kate encounter a young African-American, Gaines Townson, and their stories converge with his. As Winston-Salem is pulled into the tumultuous 1960s, these three Americans find themselves at the center of the civil rights struggle, coming to terms with the legacies of their pasts as they search for an ennobling future.

TODAY‘S PROMPT: SWIMMING

When you leave home, can you ever really come back again?

That‘s what Elaine Neil Orr explores in her new novel SWIMMING BETWEEN WORLDS, set in 1960‘s Winston-Salem, NC.

Bailedbailed

Took a good look at my TBR pile and decided to bail. I really wanted to like this one, but it just was not going anywhere. Tracker and Kate apparently find themselves in the middle of the civil rights struggle, but so far, most of the book has been their painful conversations. If you are a Gilmore Girls fan and remember the episode where Kirk makes an experimental film about meeting his girlfriend‘s family—that is how I envisioned these 👇👇👇

AmberWB conversations taking place. If you have no idea why I‘m talking about, just trust me. 😉Moving on to 6y

About halfway through with this one......and I just can‘t convince myself to care about any of the characters or what happens- but part of me feels guilty anytime I don‘t see a book all the way through! 😑

TiredLibrarian Just saw a post from someone who bailed on this 9ne, so you're not alone 😕 6y
KateFulfordAuthor If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y

1. Just started the tagged book last night...
2. It is grey and drizzly today and husband is at work, so it is just a catch up day.
3. Probably bbq- so I am making some pulled pork today!

Bailedbailed

I tried with this one, but it‘s just not working for me 1/3 of the way in. Ostensibly about the civil rights era in the south, thus far it‘s primarily a portrait of a progressive (for the time) young white guy. It‘s simply moving too slowly and I‘ve lost interest.

Have you ever lived somewhere that you wish you could go back to❓I used to live in the South, and I really miss it. It felt like I was living in a different world.

Taken from a quote by the publisher:

"A perfect read for fans of The Help and The Secret Life of Bees, SWIMMING BETWEEN WORLDS is a Southern coming-of-age novel that explores how changing viewpoints can alter people‘s lives and their communities."

What one loved about literature was all of the flaws, not in the writing, but in the characters.
