Lilac Girls
Lilac Girls: A Novel | Martha Hall Kelly
Inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine, this powerful debut novel reveals an incredible story of love, redemption, and terrible secrets that were hidden for decades. New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Carolines world is forever changed when Hitlers army invades Poland in September 1939and then sets its sights on France. An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences. For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrck, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continentsfrom New York to Paris, Germany, and Polandas Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten. In Lilac Girls, Martha Hall Kelly has crafted a remarkable novel of unsung women and their quest for love, freedom, and second chances. It is a story that will keep readers bonded with the characters, searching for the truth, until the final pages.Advance praise for Lilac Girls Inspired by actual events and real people, Martha Hall Kelly has woven together the stories of three women during World War II that reveal the bravery, cowardice, and cruelty of those days. I don't read historical fiction that often, but I'm trying to change that. This is my first read for #ReadingEurope2020 and it was a great read!

Following the lives of 3 different women during WWII, I was quickly wrapped up in the story and desperate to learn what happened with each. Beautiful writing with well-developed characters. I will definitely read the next book in this series. 💚

Finished another #NewYearWhoDis pick and itwas fantastic. I've been on a WWII kick lately, mostly focused on Jewish camps and the horror we always hear about so this look at a whole different side of this time in history, told from 3 different views in 3 different circumstances, was refreshing and so compelling.

I need to know more about these Ravensbruck Rabbits, Dr. Oberheuser and Caroline Ferriday now so if anyone has recs, please drop them!

The story of Caroline, Kasia and Herta living through (well lets be honest to some degree surviving) WWII. Its told from the perspective of each of the women as their stories interlink together. This is based on real life events and Caroline and Herta were real people. I spent much of the book (even when not reading it) worrying about the characters. This, I think, says a lot about how well written and compelling this novel is.

I really hate when I buy a book that I already own... and have already read.... 😳🙄 good thing the second purchase was made from Better World Books and didn‘t cost much! #grammaslibrary #imlosingit

marleed I did that 2 times in December. No excuses because I have an app tracking the physical books I own. All I had to do is make a quick search. So, they went straight to my internal little free library - my shelf where I encourage company to take a book as a lovely parting gift as they leave. 2mo
Djspens @marleed that‘s a great idea! My young cousin was at my house over Christmas and I was showing her my “gramma‘s library” and talking about what books we read. Nightingale was a recent one she loved, I think I‘ll send it to her for a little surprise 😃 2mo

I went into this one with low expectations. I like fiction about WWII but there is so much out there and oftentimes the books that make the bestseller lists are more saccharine than substantive. This book is a little of both but I was captivated. I do wish the story had only one narrator to focus on, especially because the author was not able to fully flesh out each of the characters making it harder to really connect with them.

A well written and beautiful story. Lilac Girls is a fictional retelling of real events with characters based on real people. I learned a lot about admirable individuals from history who I didn't know existed. It was a page turner, but handled heavy topics respectfully. I definitely recommend it.

This book brought me to tears, made me gasp, laugh, and shout in excitement. Beautifully written, the stories all intermingled with one another. Rich with historical facts that leave you in shock and horror. Following women of all different walks of life thru the trials and tribulations during Hitlers reign, this will leave you wanting more. Did I weep in the shower after finishing this book? Yes. Yes I did. Told from the POVs of three very different women in WWII, LILIAC GIRLS tells the story of the Ravensbrück Rabbits—Girls horrifically experimented on. It‘s a story not told in my history books and one we should forget. May we always remember the capacity humans have for both violence and heroism. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #bfcr2 Book 1/30

This was for my IRL book group, and I just didn‘t love it. The context of WWII and the camps is certainly heartbreaking. But I thought the author could have pulled me in emotionally more than she did. Is it wrong to say a historical book is predictable? That‘s how this felt. Plus, I disliked two of the narrators. Not my fav, overall.
