The Language of Spells
The Language of Spells | Garret Weyr
12 posts | 12 read | 14 to read
Grisha is a dragon in a world that's forgotten how to see him. Maggie is a unusual child who thinks she's perfectly ordinary. They're an unlikely duobut magic, like friendship, is funny. Sometimes it chooses those who might not look so likely. And magic has chosen Grisha and Maggie to solve the darkest mystery in Vienna. Decades ago, when World War II broke out, someone decided that there were too many dragons for all of them to be free. As they investigate, Grisha and Maggie ask the question everyone's forgotten: Where have the missing dragons gone? And is there a way to save them? At once richly magical and tragically historical, The Language of Spells is a novel full of adventure about remembering old stories, forging new ones, and the transformative power of friendship.

A girl and a dragon befriend each other in Vienna (but of course!) and then go on a quest to free dragons that have been enchanted into a deep sleep. There are magic potions, talking cats, and travels to London, Rome, and the Black Forest, but the deepest magic of all are friendship and a willingness to make sacrifices to help others. I came for the enchanting illustrations and I stayed for the story, which is quietly touching and bittersweet.

alysonimagines I just read this! If you don‘t mind some bitter with your sweet, it‘s a quietly touching story about the friendship between a girl and a dragon who live in Vienna. They go on a quest to free dragons who have been enchanted into a deep sleep, which takes them to London, Rome, and the Black Forest. The magic, though an important part of the story, is understated—what matters most are friendship and a willingness to make sacrifices to help others. (edited) 6y
alysonimagines P.S. The enchanting illustrations are what had me at hello. I stayed for the story. 6y
WiseGirl13 It sounds great! Officially a Tbr! 6y

This was a cute story. Grisha is a vegetarian dragon who is transformed into a teapot for several decades. Once he is freed, he and his friend Maggie set about to save the other dragons who have all been put under a sleeping spell. However, I felt the story was stretched a bit long. Its possible that another glance over by an editor might have helped. I dont imagine Ms. Weyr cares much for cats as she isn't particularly kind to them in this book.

zsuzsanna_reads The concept sounds great. Vegetarian teapot dragons! 6y

In this unique story, dragons are second class citizens closely monitored by a department that decides where they can live, what jobs they can have, who they can speak to. But what happened to the hundreds of dragons who disappeared? A young girl and her only friend, a dragon, set out to find some answers. A lovely story and a gentle way to introduce tough concepts like genocide and social injustice to kids.

One of the things I have found while reading "The Language of Spells," is that I love some of the author's descriptions. While not cheerful, this has been one of my favorites.

Started this one last night before bed. It's been a while since I read a book meant for a much younger crowd. I find it a bit wordy but the story idea I quite like.

In addition to all of the bookswaps I committed to in September, I'm also going to give this a shot. I am a VERY slow reader and can also be easily distracted. This, I'm hoping, will help me to stay focused and finish some of my teetering "to be read" pile! Thanks for the challenge, @TheReadingMermaid ??‍♀️ The tagged book will be the first on my list!

I have a confession to make. Tonight, I did the thing I always do, folks: I finished one ARC, got cocky, and ended up requesting four more 🙄 #netgalley

Tonight‘s goal was SUPPOSED to be finding a new audiobook. On Libby. Whoops.

julesG Just four! In such situations, I often end up requesting 20 new books, ending up getting 18, when my shelf is already full. 😉 7y
