Raphael Affair
Raphael Affair | Iain M Pears
11 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
"Deliciously literate" (Kirkus Reviews) and filled with "articulate characters and erudite art commentary" (The New York Times Book Review), this acclaimed series of novels by Iain Pears combines art and history, literature and mystery fiction, with the same passion for detail he displayed in his New York Times bestseller An Instance of the Fingerpost. In The Raphael Affair, the first book in the series, we are introduced to Jonathan Argyll, an enthusiastic young art scholar from England who has followed his suspicions about a long-lost Raphael painting to a small church in Rome. Not only is the painting in question gone from the site, it has been swiftly purchased, restored, auctioned, and installed in Rome's National Museum. But when the recovered Raphael is just as swiftly destroyed in a fire, Argyll begins to suspect its authenticity and the innocence of every person in its path."

A promising start to theJonathan Argyll Art Mystery Series. An interesting plot revolving around Jonathan trying to find an old Raphael paining that was painted over to keep it hidden. This takes us to Italy, Switzerland and England and leads to murders I hope in the next book to find out more about the main characters. Enough promise to market me want to continue on with the series, #ReadingEurope2020 #Switzerland

An enjoyable quick read. The first one in the Jonathan Argyll and Flavia di Stefano series. I must admit, by the end I was getting the different pictures a bit confused in my mind. A nice final twist, though.

First return to The Regency for quite a while. How better to get match fit for a day of World Cup games? And better still with an entertaining book. #IainPears #theraphaelaffair #books #saturdaybooks #currentlyreading #booksandcoffee #coffeeandbooks #caffeine #caffeineaddict #regencycafe #westminsterinstitution #booksatbreakfast

I was hoping I'd love is one. I think I expected it to be more literary (along the lines of an Arturo Perez-Reverte), and it had more of a cozy mystery feel. It was a nice little read, and I'll probably pick up the rest at some point. If you're looking for a light art mystery, you'll enjoy it.

I know it's set in Rome, and I'm in Florence, but I'm pretty excited about a quiet night in with the view, a book, and some bubbles.

BookBabe Close enough! Enjoy! 😃 8y

Cozy Mystery - has all the tells of being written by someone who read art history at Oxford: slightly erudite, a little clever, but lacks heat and passion between the romantic leads, and of the setting
