An enticing exploration of the smallest islands of Britain from the award-winning, bestselling author of The Butterfly IslesThe people of the British Isles are an island race. We are distributed across an archipelago of two large islands and 6,289 smaller ones. Some, like the Isle of Man, resemble miniature nations, with their own language and tax laws; others, like Ray Island in Essex are abandoned and mysterious places haunted by myths, ghosts and rats. There are resurgent islands such as Eigg, which have been liberated from capricious owner-dictators; holy islands like Bardsey, the resting place of 20,000 saints, and still a site of spiritual questing; and dying islands such as St Kilda, famed for the evacuation of its people, and now dominated by wild sheep and seabirds. Our small islands are both places of freedom and imprisonment, party destinations and oases of peace, strangely suburban and deeply wild. They are places where the past is unusually present, but they can also offer a vision of alternative future. At times of crisis, the centre often looks to the periphery for escape, and inspiration. In this evocative book, Patrick Barkham travels from larger small islands to ever-smaller islands in search of their special magic. Meeting all kinds of islanders, from nuns to puffins, from dropouts to rare subspecies of vole, he seeks to discover what it is to be an islander. How do communities function on small islands? Are they insular or outward looking? Are eccentrics attracted to islands, or do islands make people eccentric? Do they keep us sane or drive us mad? Patrick's journey across the British Isles sets out to answer these questions. Along the way, he uncovers bizarre and touching stories about island life, meets a host of curious characters and native species, and explores some of the most beautiful landscapes in Britain.

@Pigpen_Reads here are the books you managed to save from your shipwreck! I chose them as follows: You - it is on my shelf as well and I love the show; Beastly - I really liked this book: the author‘s take on the beast is great; The Rogue King - I own this but have never read it - if you choose it I‘ll read it as well; White Lies - never read it but I love Linda Howard; the Bookworm Crush - I just saw this while browsing yesterday: it looks cute!

Pigpen_Reads Thank you!! I've been eyeing The Rogue King recently. 😁 2y

Saw this on Facebook and wanted to share to see what everyone thinks! It would be really hard for me to pick, but I think it would have to be Harlan Coben. I can never put his books down! What author would YOU choose???

WhatWouldJaneDo It's a hard choice, but I think I'd pick Stephen King. I love most (although not all) of his books that I've read and he's written soooo many that I'd still have quite a lot to choose from. 6y
Suzze Stephen King is a great choice. I might pick Lee Child as I could take his whole long series! I do love Harlan too. I‘m a character in a few of his books. 😃 @WhatWouldJaneDo (edited) 6y
blondie Probably Jodi Picoult. I don't think I've ever disliked any of her books and there are plenty I've yet to read. 6y

Pickpick

A great follow-up to Coastlines (tagged in comments). I am definitely not suited for island life, but such was the magic of Barkham's descriptions that I was nearly convinced 😂 Worth reading for the armchair traveller with an interest in the British Isles.
