The Clockwork Universe
The Clockwork Universe: saac Newto, Royal Society, and the Birth of the Modern WorldI | Edward Dolnick
14 posts | 11 read | 27 to read
New York Times bestselling author Edward Dolnick brings to light the true story of one of the most pivotal moments in modern intellectual historywhen a group of strange, tormented geniuses invented science as we know it, and remade our understanding of the world. Dolnicks earth-changing story of Isaac Newton, the Royal Society, and the birth of modern science is at once an entertaining romp through the annals of academic history, in the vein of Bill Brysons A Short History of Nearly Everything, and a captivating exploration of a defining time for scientific progress, in the tradition of Richard Holmes The Age of Wonder.

Lunchtime will never be the same. I joined this facility on Friday. Today I walked the track for a mile, which is good considering I haven‘t exercised on a regular basis for about 15 years. I‘m planning to do some classes, too, but want to ease back into it. My current Audible book (tagged) kept me company😊. #litsywalk #audiowalking

Theaelizabet Audible and walking=👍👏👏👏 6y

My new audio book listen— I go from not minding the narrator to wanting to proverbially throttle him.

This fine book tells how the world progressed from 1600, when Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake by the Church for proclaiming that the earth was just one of an infinite number of planets, to 1705 when Isaac Newton was knighted by the Queen of England for his discoveries in physics, one them being how how gravity maintained planets' orbits around suns - basically proving what cost Bruno his life. In the 17th century the modern world was born.

Was there ever a time when god fearing humans didn‘t think the end of the world was nigh?!?! 😡

Ugh! When superstition still held a firm grasp on the minds of men. But the tables will soon begin to turn.

“I have seen a professor of mathematics, simply because he was great in his vocation, buried like a king who had been good to his subjects.” I visited his grave while in London last month. I was blown away. Darwin and Hawking are next to him. 😮

I absolutely love this book. It‘s all about Newton, The Royal Society, and what life was like in 17th century London. I‘m listening on audio but stopped in to B&N to see the pictures.

This book was quite fantastic. Early science at its most engaging. This book does not treat the likes of Newton, his contemporaries, and predecessors like 21st century thinkers that happen to be in wigs and tights, but rather explores the dynamic juxtaposition of their genius and their placement in time. A book about mental giants who still thought dry human poop was a good eye medication.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds really good! 8y

How funny! We just take our scientific mindset for granted but everything was nuts in Ancient times.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That's a great quote! They knew it changed, just didn't have any other way of explaining except to anthropomorphize it. 8y

TR: The story of a band of men who lived in a world of dirt and disease but pictured a universe that ran like a perfect machine.

Old-timey science! It‘s not just dudes in powdered wigs! Naw, it's about their ecstatic sense of wonder, grueling focus, and sometimes such craziness!

A good pick!

Shortstack Listened to this on Audible earlier this year and loved it!! 8y

I can't stop picking up new books before I finish old ones because I always get too excited about getting to learn new things. 🙈
