That's Not English
That's Not English: Britishisms, Americanisms, and What Our English Says About Us | Erin Moore
8 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
An expats witty and insightful exploration of English and American cultural differences through the lens of language that will leave readers gobsmacked In Thats Not English, the seemingly superficial differences between British and American English open the door to a deeper exploration of a historic and fascinating cultural divide. In each of the thirty chapters, Erin Moore explains a different word we use that says more about us than we think. For example, "Quite" exposes the tension between English reserve and American enthusiasm; in "Moreish," she addresses our snacking habits. In "Partner," she examines marriage equality; in "Pull," the theme is dating and sex; "Cheers" is about drinking; and "Knackered" covers how we raise our kids. The result is a cultural history in miniature and an expatriates survival guide. American by birth, Moore is a former book editor who specialized in spotting British booksincluding Eats, Shoots & Leavesfor the US market. Shes spent the last seven years living in England with her Anglo American husband and a small daughter with an English accent. Thats Not English is the perfect companion for modern Anglophiles and the ten million British and American travelers who visit one anothers countries each year.

A light, entertaining read. Some bits were hilarious, others dragged out a little. Informative whichever side of the Atlantic you are, though it seemed to me more geared towards an American audience.

This, plus multiple mugs of PG Tips with milk and sugar, got me through my work day today, which was INCREDIBLY LONG. I‘ve wanted to live in England since I was 12. One of these days, maybe. ❤️🇬🇧#england

TaylorMay Omg I love that cheese 💙🧀 7y
PenguinInFlight @TaylorMay Me too!! The cranberry one is my favorite, but my Walmart stopped carrying it and started carrying the blueberry instead...which I like almost as well. It‘s still delicious. 😍 7y
TaylorMay Agreed. If you like trying to find UK stuff on the US check it Cost Plus World Market. They have awesome stuff from across the pond 😉 7y

TaylorMay Of course!!! Make sure to post what you find 😉 I love the UK can't wait to go back 7y
kamoorephoto Oh I so miss my Digestives!! 😿😿 I‘m a Brit in the States... 7y
PenguinInFlight @kamoorephoto there is definitely not a US equivalent. The closest thing I can think of is a graham cracker, and that‘s still not the same at all. 7y
kamoorephoto @PenguinInFlight No, it‘s not 😭 Nothing beats them at all!!! I miss my biscuits! And so much cheaper than buying cookies. We understand the importance of a good ‘biscuit‘ with our tea or coffee in England!! 😸 7y

Two hours down! I was going to try for another hour before calling it a night, but my current read started creeping me out a little bit and I had to switch to something totally different as a distraction. Turns out reading about Americanisms vs Britishisms distracts me AND makes me extra sleepy 😴😴😴

I'm happy with a few hours already under my belt! Hope you're all enjoying your books and reading nooks. See you in the morning! #24in48

A friend in the U.K. mailed me a surprise Christmas present...I can cross "owning a real Monkey from PG Tips" off the bucket list. ?❤?

I absofreakinglutely LOVED this book. A very humorous account of the differences between American English and British English. Super fun read for word lovers like myself. 😍

Procrastireader Bill Bryson, a truly funny person, wrote The Mother Tongue (about English) and Notes From A Small Island (about THE English). This year he put out The Road To Little Dribbling as a follow-up to NFASI. If you haven't read them, you'll like them. Actually, you should read *everything* by Bill Bryson. OK, EVERYONE should read everything by Bill Bryson. 😄 8y
PenguinInFlight @Procrastireader I'll have to check these out!! 👍🏻 Thank you!! ☺️💜 8y
