Out of Thin Air
Out of Thin Air: A True Story of Impossible Murder in Iceland | Anthony Adeane
3 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
In 1974, two men vanished without a trace under suspicious circumstances, shocking the people of Iceland, where serious crime is almost non-existent. More than a year later there seemed to be a breakthrough when a small-time crook named Erla Bolladottir described a dream to police that they interpreted as a sign of trauma related to the mens disappearance. After lengthy interrogations, investigations and courtroom dramas, Erla and five acquaintances confessed to killing both men and were given prison sentences ranging from three years to life. But over the years the case against the convicted six began to disintegrate, and one major question remained unanswered: Why had they all confessed to murder if they hadnt done it? Out of Thin Air joins Erla in the present day as she pursues her exoneration, exploring the many facets of this bizarre and bewildering case and the social and cultural history of Iceland, a country of vast landscapes, extreme weather and strange folklore, where more than eighty per cent of the population believes that elves might exist.

This is a story of the investigation into a true crime that happened in Iceland in 1974. It‘s a bit dry with lots of emphasis on the mistakes made. The real gem is the historical facts about Iceland #ArmchairTravel ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Cinfhen Uh, too bad it wasn‘t great! I‘ll still keep it on my list #ReadingEurope2020 4y
Freespirit Yes keep it on the list @Cinfhen it is very readable😄 4y

This week I have only read sporadically but am enjoying a nonfiction murder saga set in Iceland, a country that has a very low crime rate. 1974 two men vanish in seperate incidents. I‘m enjoying the interwoven stories of life in Iceland which I was lucky to visit in September. Included is a pic of the very unusual church in Reykjavík. #BookReport
Next up for my #WeeklyForecast is a trip to Moscow... @Cinfhen

CarolynM That church looks amazing! 4y

Freespirit That church was breathtaking @CarolynM in a different way to medieval churches. 4y

Went to see Anthony Adeane at his book event at the Wigtown (Scotland‘s National Book Town) Book Festival and boy oh boy this book sounds fascinating! Hope to read soon! He also made a documentary about it for the BBC which is now on Netflix.
