14 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 13 to read
This first book in an irresistible new series introduces librarian and reluctant sleuth Raymond Ambler, a doggedly curious fellow who uncovers murderous secrets hidden behind the majestic marble faade of New York Citys landmark 42nd Street Library. Murder at the 42nd Street Library follows Ambler and his partners in crime-solving as they track down a killer, shining a light on the dark deeds and secret relationships that are hidden deep inside the famous flagship building at the corner of 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. In their search for the reasons behind the murder, Ambler and his crew uncover sinister, and profoundly disturbing, relationships among the scholars studying in the iconic library. Included among the players are a celebrated mystery writer who has donated his papers to the librarys crime fiction collection; that writers long-missing daughter, a prominent New York society woman with a hidden past, and more than one of Amblers colleagues at the library. Shocking revelations lead inexorably to the traumatic events that followthe reading room will never be the same.

A library setting and a librarian sleuth. What‘s not to like? A lot, sadly. The author can‘t decide what he wants to do with the book — cozy mystery, hardboiled detective novel, police procedural interspersed with soft porn. Ambler, our hero, is not that memorable; his police friend, Cosgrove, is not bright; and the women are stereotypes. The narrator of the audio would be perfect if this were a Sam Spade novel, but it‘s not, so he‘s awkward.

Interesting book. I enjoyed the setting, and the characters but found the slow pace somewhat exasperating.

A lot going on here. Maybe too much.

Pamwurtzler Too bad because that book looks like it has so much potential. 6y
Skeeterisme @Pamwurtzler Yeah, I thought so too! Maybe others would like it more than I did. It‘s not bad it just wasn‘t as focused as I‘d hoped. But it was topsy turvy enough that I‘m not sure I know who the murderer in the library was! 6y

“Behind the library, the spindly green cafe chairs were scattered along the slate walks among the ivy, the daffodils, and budding sycamore trees.”

I couldn‘t put this book down. An excellent way to celebrate my first day of winter vacation. Ambler was likeable but not overwhelmingly familiar. It was clear from the beginning that something kept him aloof from others. The cast of suspects had my head spinning as characters were not who they said they were or appeared to be. The plot was intricately woven around the library and it‘s research capabilities. This is a mystery that I recommend.

Just started reading. How on earth could I resist a murder mystery set in a famous library after all?

The title intrigued me and I was looking forward to reading this book. I was disappointed from the beginning. The story is awkwardly written and extremely convoluted.

tpixie Sad such potential! 7y

Great new detective who is a librarian. Can't get much better than that in my opinion. #conlehane
