Walking Through Turquoise
Walking Through Turquoise | Laurie MacFayden
5 posts | 1 read
"Boy or girl? You can't tell. Losing your mind? You can't tell. You can't tell a lover that someone else has moved into your heart. Laurie MacFayden's third book of poetry continues to explore the flirtations, passions, and secrets mined in her previous titles, "White Shirt" and "Kissing Keeps Us Afloat". Things we want to shout from rooftops but can't reveal. Dark, shameful things we're told to keep quiet about--until we wonder if they really did happen. MacFayden ponders a one-way trip to Mars, the turmoil of clouds, the magic of moonstone and turquoise. How can any desire survive the tragedy of human aging? she asks, never losing sight of the joying, wet, throbbing hallelujah. A poignant look at self-censorship, "Walking Through Turquoise" is also a celebration of the swirl and twine that bind us to things of this earth and beyond."--

you can‘t contain love
in a skillet, in a pocket
fancy inkwell or a locket
you can‘t fence it in with gate or paddock
brick and mortar cannot shape it
you cannot hoard it, guide it
steer love with hand, paddle or wheel
you can only grasp its essence
when it presents in tiny flashes
silver pulses, murmurations
the first time she calls you honey

i thought i wanted a too-handsome hollywood
cowboy.
before we rode off into the sunset
we would ride through the streets of laredo, or dodge,
or dry gulch
or one of those other westerny cowpokery names,
he with a not-quite-white stetson and me in an
appropriate
outfit for the times

(from the poem: resplendent boots)

LeahBergen Love the photo! 😆 6y
Lindy @LeahBergen Thanks. The photos were taken in Dawson City about 12 years ago. My niece (on the left) now has two daughters in school. 6y

The Edmonton #Poetry Festival is underway. At one of the events yesterday, local poets—including my sweetie Laurie MacFayden—read from their new books. ❤️
