My research about the Great War us keeping me busy.
It's a journey. Truly it is. I never expect it to be this intense.

I'v thought to the Great War mostly as the quintessentia industrial war, so far. A war where people were dehumanised and objectified. But l'm discovering that while this is true, on the other hand this was also a war involving very powerful emotions.

'Germany bows: The Armistice has been signed'
The war is over... more or less.

@AlaMich

Most of the frontpages look like this.

AlaMich OMG, the print is so TINY!!! 5y
JazzFeathers @AlaMich It is. But consider that the paper's original size was more than double the size of this book. 5y

About the sinking of the Lusitania

CrowCAH Very cool newspaper 📰! 5y
AlaMich I think it‘s fascinating to see headlines of major world events of the past, with the advantage of knowing all the facts that they did not. 5y
JazzFeathers @CrowCAH l love the old newspaper. I've read a few articles. They are so different from what we are accustomed to. 5y
JazzFeathers @AlaMich True. It gives us a sense of how it was perceived back than. Which doesn't necessarily match how we perceve it today. 5y

@AlaMich

'England declares war on Germany'

I can't wait to read the actual article, though l'll need a magnifier. The original paper were at least twice the size of the book.

I've read newspapers from this era before. They had such a different style from us.

AlaMich Thank you so much for posting all these photos!! I‘ve really enjoyed looking at them. 😊 5y
JazzFeathers @AlaMich You are very welcome. I enjoyed sharing them 😊 5y

'Germany threatens France through Belgium'

Don't you find these frontpages extremely visual?
Sure, not all are like this. But l'm quite surprised by the visuals.

AlaMich They are, especially with the fancy fonts. 5y

@AlaMich l gladly oblige 😊

This title says, 'The European War is about to break out'.
You know, l tend to think that the awareness to be one continent and to some extent one people is something new. I tend to think that one hundred years ago people only read and was interested in their country. But these frontpages speak of a different reality, one where even what happened far from home was already important.

The bulk of the book is made up by the frontpages of the regular newspaper.
This is the first one, the news of the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo.

There are reproductions of the colour frontpage of the Sunday edition.
They do suffer of propaganda intent, but they're still awesome.

I know this is very ltalian, but l wanted to share anyway.
This is a collection of the front pages of the most important Italian newspaper during the years of the Great War.
Couldn't resist!

AlaMich I would love to see more photos of front page headlines from the book! I can always use google translate to figure out what they are saying. 😊 5y
RealBooks4ever Looks like this was published in yearly books in English. I would love to see this series! 5y
twohectobooks This is very cool 5y
JazzFeathers @RealBooks4ever The book you tagged looks very interesting, but it's a different thing. This one is not really illustrated. It's a collection of front pages of an Italian newspaper. I doubt it was ever translated into English. 5y
JazzFeathers @twohectobooks It is. The moment l saw it, l needed to get it 😀 5y

I want to learn more about the tragic events that lead to The Great War (World War I) but I wouldn't know where to begin. Anybody has any books to recomend?

julesG Fiction or non-fiction? 6y
julesG I think one of the questions you need to ask yourself is, how far do you want to go back? European history is full of small and bigger wars. In school, as well as at university, the French Revolution is seen as the first step into what is modern Europe. A lot of events can be tied back to the events the FR set in motion. Anyway, most historians will agree that Imperialism, Militarism, and Nationalism were the key factors. Your research should... 6y
julesG ...start with these. That would mean, around 1870s/1880s. I cannot recommend any specific non-fiction books, nor a lot of fiction. Still, if you haven't read it yet, read the following book. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Texreader For fiction, the first book in Ken Follett‘s The Century Trilogy. (edited) 6y
JoRead @julesG I was thinking perhaps as far back as what caused the assassination of the Archduke. Thanks for the rec 2😊 6y
JoRead @Texreader yes, I forgot about that one! Thanks! 😉 6y
julesG Then have a look at Nationalism. That should be a good starting point. 6y
