In a place like no other, on an island in the shape of a tear drop, two sisters are born into a family of the oracle. Kamikuu, with creamy skin and almond eyes, is admired far and wide; Namima, small but headstrong, learns to live in her sister's shadow.

Two sisters, one destined to serve the realm of light and one to serve the dark in this novel that reimagines the ancient Japanese creation myth of Izanami and Izanaki.
From Cannongate who apparently has a whole series of myth retellings. Who knew? 😮

Ramen and gyozai to go with a Japanese novel

rabbitprincess I've been craving ramen after watching Ponyo yesterday! 5y
rwmg @rabbitprincess Who or what is Ponyo? 5y
rabbitprincess @rwmg Ponyo is a Studio Ghibli animated movie retelling of The Little Mermaid. In this movie, Ponyo, the mermaid, is a 5-year-old girl who befriends a little boy of the same age. In her human form she really likes ham, and in one scene she and her friend Sosuke have ramen much like the bowl in your photo. 5y

A thoughtful and haunting story about two very different sisters, their roles in life and their effect, for better and for worse, on each other's lives. I just bloody adored this tale.

Tsubame If your focus was on the relationship between the sisters, then I can see why you liked this book, but overall I found the writing rather dull, but that might be due to the translation. Besides I felt that there was a lot of potential in the story that just got wasted, although it's hard to put in words why I felt that way 🙈 7y
Jamesfahyauthor @Tsubame that's what's so great about reading. It's so subjective. You find books where some people have reviewed as 'best read ever' and the next review is from someone who hated it 😆 I'm a great believer that different stories speak to different people differently (and at different times) 😊 7y

Soba noodle salad with egg, peas, edamame, homegrown radish and a yuzu-soy dressing. And a book written by a Japanese woman best known for her crime novels but this one delves into myth - a retelling of the Japanese creation myth of Izanagi and Izanami.

Zelma Looks delicious! 7y
Aleida Sounds good. Let is know! 7y

Truth. Also, shout out to the moms at the park today who didn't even attempt small talk with me while I was listening to an audiobook. I appreciate it so much. #NoSarcasm #ThanksBuzzfeedForThis #BookMeme

#WITMonth part 6 - a feminist myth retelling

A part of the Canongate Myth Series, GODDESS CHRONICLE puts a spin on the Japanese myth of Izanagi, Izanami, and creation.
