THE BASIS FOR STEVE MCQUEEN'S UPCOMING MAJOR MOTION PICTURE, WIDOWS IS A FAST-PACED HEIST THRILLER WITH AN ALL FEMALE CAST YOU WON'T FORGET. Before PRIME SUSPECT there was WIDOWS . . . Facing life alone, they turned to crime together. Dolly Rawlins, Linda Pirelli and Shirley Miller are left devastated when their husbands are killed in a security van heist that goes disastrously wrong. When Dolly discovers her husband Harry's bank deposit box, containing a gun, money - and detailed plans for the hijack - she realises that she only has three options: 1. Give up and forget she ever found them; 2. Hand over Harry's ledgers to the police, or to the thugs that have been hassling her for information they think she has; 3. She and the other widows could carry out the robbery themselves Novices in the craft of crime, the three women make their preparations. Along the way they discover that Harry's plan required four people, not three. But only three bodies were discovered in the carnage of the original hijack - so who was the fourth man, and where is he now? Recruiting hooker Bella O'Reilly as their fourth, the widows are determined to execute their plan. Facing mounting pressure from DI Resnick, and local thugs Arnie and Tony Fisher, can they stick together and finish the job their husbands started . . .

4/5

Took me a while to get into the book but enjoyed it nonetheless. Kept a great pace, although I would have liked to see some important side characters fleshed out a bit more (Arnie). While it was. Good book, I don‘t know if I will read the other books in the series. I liked it as a standalone book.

I won the third book in this series recently without realizing it was part of the series and I hadn‘t read the other books. So, I put a hold at the library for the first two and just finished this one. It was really good. I love the strong female characters who take over the role that men normally do in books and movies. Full of suspense and excitement and I‘m looking forward to reading the rest!

gradcat Was this a movie? I seem to remember a title like this with maybe Viola Davis starring... 5y
Victoriahoperose @gradcat yes I think that‘s the one! I‘m going to try and check it out this weekend and see how it is! 5y
gradcat I hope it‘s good for you. I love Viola Davis! ♥️ 5y

Loved this book! Yet another well-written, gripping read by Lynda La Plante. I can fully recommend her Anna Travis series as a truly excellent example of great crime writing. Widows was a real page-turner for me, especially after the first chapter. On your toes until the final page!

#BookMail Pt4 How could I possibly pass up signed Lynda La Plante books? Booktopia.com.au have a few of her books signed at the moment, including the sequel to this one. The Queen Of The police procedural subgenre, creator of that famous female detective, Jane Tennyson, has another female driven crime book with this. When 3 widows of some shady men are left penniless, they decide to carry out the heist their husbands had planned.

I started this book before the new year, but have only read 90 pages so far. I‘m just not that interested and will put it down for days at a time. Have you read it? Does it improve? Should I just bail and see the movie?

Owlizabeth I saw the movie and really liked it, I haven‘t read the book though. 6y
Bookzombie @Owlizabeth I‘m pretty sure I will really like the movie. Probably going to bail on the book though. 6y

Went and saw this movie last night. Obviously they've changed a lot from the book but it was an entertaining film. Given that this is the third adaptation to be made it's a strong story

Just saw this kick-ass female heist movie at the theater.... based on a Lynda la Plante (of Prime Suspect fame) book and mini series from 1983....
It wasn‘t until the final credits that I discovered that Gillian Flynn adapted the screenplay!
Really tense, fast moving and gripping (though pretty violent at times 🙈) A great adaptation 👍

queerbookreader I've considered seeing it cos of Viola Davis!! So glad you liked it 6y
Mitch I really enjoyed it! 6y
LibrarianRyan I did like it. And I liked that it was raw. It wasn‘t curtsied up. 6y
