A problematic sequel. The racist stereotypes are more apparent and the position of the doctor as a white saviour who the indigenous people choose to make king is quite uncomfortable. Beatrix did still enjoy listening but enough of the series for me.
so-soIt‘s probably my fault for reading the original and not the updated version but ooof at the casual racism and white savior narrative. If you can compartmentalize that stuff there is a good message of animal welfare and taking the time to learn and think critically in even the most unusual situations. That racism though is hard to overcome.
There‘s a lovely two for the price of one sale on reading buddies today. Simon and Sierra are helping me start my second Newbery title.

pickThe story was entertains but I do believe I have had enough of Dr. Dolittle. Glad I have read some of the stories. Definitely not one of my favorites. 3.5 🌟

pickThis Newbery winner has held up well unlike others. Fun tale of boy who lives in little English village. He becomes apprenticed to a doctor who studies nature and who has learned to talk with animals. They go on a voyage (voyages is a stretch) to continue his work and find a floating island off the coast of South America. There they meet an Indian naturalist and spend 2 years having adventures until they return to England. #NewberyChallenge
Turns out I have a lot more books with pink spines than pink covers, but I'm loving that Doctor Doolittle is one of them. Such a classic! #RiotGrams
