Probable Claws: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery | Rita Mae Brown
9 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown return to Albemarle County, Virgina, as tangled mysteries past and present converge in the bestselling Mrs. Murphy series. As feline collaborators go, you couldnt ask for better than Sneaky Pie Brown. The New York Times Book Review With the New Year just around the corner, winter has transformed the cozy Blue Ridge Mountain community of Crozet, Virginia, into a living snow globe. Its the perfect setting for Mary Minor Harry Haristeen to build a new work shed designed by her dear friend, local architect Gary Gardner. But the natural serenity is shattered when out of the blue, right in front of Harry and Deputy Cynthia Cooper, and in broad daylight, Gary is shot to death by a masked motorcyclist. Outraged by the brazen murder, Harry begins to burrow into her friends pastand unearths a pattern of destructive greed reaching far back into Virginias post-Revolutionary history. When Harry finds incriminating evidence, the killer strikes again. Heedless of her own safety, Harry follows a trail of clues to a construction site in Richmond, where the discovery of mysterious remains has recently halted work. Aided as always by her loyal, if opinionated, companions, crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Corgi, Harry hunts for a link between the decades-old dead, the recently violently deceasedand ancient secrets that underlie everything. And while other deaths are narrowly averted in a flurry of fur, the killer remains at largeever more desperate and dangerous. The deep-rooted legacy of corruption thats been exposed can never be buried again. But if Harry keeps pursuing the terrible truth, she may be digging her own grave.

Upon further consideration, I‘m lowering this to a so-so. It‘s not “bad,” but the annoying aspects really were quite annoying. Mainly, the historical timeline that ties in with nothing unless you‘re reading the whole series, and the many conversations that served only as exposition. The talking animals were fine, and the contemporary story was somewhat interesting.

2.5 stars. More in comments.

Susanita Dishonorable mention. The story was very compelling, but the audiobook narrator got on my nerves so much, I nearly threw my phone across the room multiple times. 3y
megnews That drives me crazy when a book should be good but the audio ruins it. Thanks for sharing! 3y

This was an interesting mystery, but I think maybe I need to have read the whole series to appreciate it more? Anyway, it‘s finished in time for book club tomorrow, and I think we‘ll have a good discussion. Here‘s a gratuitous picture of Kili doing his upside down pose. #catsoflitsy

Meanwhile, Goodreads is back!

Yay!!! I have finally finished reading all the published books in the Mrs. Murphy series. A new one is coming out in May and I am all set to read the final installment about the families from the 1700‘s. I have read this series in chronological order and it is the equivalent of eating very satisfying junk food and I mean that as a compliment!

Harry is still ridiculous, but I just love this series. I also still miss Herb & Miranda, but am really loving the way back glimpse.

Does this sentence sentence seem incorrect to any one else or is it just me. Clover fields was as self-sustaining as possible. I feel like the word was should be the word were.

RaimeyGallant Is Clover Fields, capital F, a singular place? 7y
Melli Actually I went back and re-read the author was speaking about a estate named that not actual Clover Fields.. lol what threw me off was the sentence before where the cook dried her hands on a towel with clovers on them. So I misunderstood the next sentence. Plus it‘s late. 7y
