Twelve-year-old Mysti Murphy wishes she were a character in a book. If her life were fictional, she'd magically know how to deal with the fact that her best friend, Anibal Gomez, has abandoned her in favor of being a "hipster." Courage For Beginners by Karen Harrington is a Sunshine State Readers Award winning RF novel about a young 7th grader named Mysti who‘s best friend decides to ditch her in favor of becoming a “hipster”. Mysti is mostly worried because Ani was the only person she trusted with her family secret. Now that Mystis father has fallen sick and is in the hospital, she must dig past her fear and anger to find answers for her family. This is a great story

This #audiobook was great! Mysti wishes her life were as simple as a book. Then maybe she'd know what to do when her dad is hospitalized or her only friend ditches her. But most of all, maybe she would know how to help her agoraphobic, recluse mother. I enjoyed the first-person narrator and how the book dealt with a mental health issue. I wish more middle grade books approached such topics.
