Sassy: The Life Of Sarah Vaughan | Leslie Gourse
5 posts
Sarah Vaughan possessed the most spectacular voice in jazz history. In Sassy, Leslie Gourse, the acclaimed biographer of Nat King Cole and Joe Williams, defines and celebrates Vaughans vital musical legacy and offers a detailed portrait of the woman as well as the singer. Revealed here is The Divine One as only her closest friends and musical associates knew her. By her early twenties Sarah Vaughan was singining with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Billy Eckstine, helping them invent bebop. For forty-five years thereafter, she reigned supreme in both pop and jazz, with several million-selling hits (among them Broken Hearted Melody, Make Yourself Comfortable, and Misty). But life offstage was never smooth for Sarah Vaughan. Her voluptuous voice was matched by her exuberant appetite for excess: three failed marriages, financial difficulties through many changes in management, late-night jam sessions, liquor, and cocaine. In Sassy, though, we also see the feisty and unpretentious woman who worked hard all her life to support her parents and adopted daughter, and who came to savor the hard-won independence and worldwide acclaim she achieved as the greatest jazz singer of her generation.

1. Dry.
2. July🔆
3. No, it feels like my youth went by more quickly!
4. Hate. So strong a word and used way too often.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I envy your dry weather. We have had so much heat, rain, and humidity here lately. 6y
IljaRianca @BarbaraTheBibliophage oh no, it's more that I wish it was dry, lol. It's very humid and warm here atm. It's pretty okay now, but a few weeks ago it was 35 degrees celcius. We are not equipped for that here! It's the hottest summer ever measured and for the longest period! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @IljaRianca Ooooh! Yes, I can imagine. We‘ve had the rainiest summer on record. Hoping the change of season brings some relief for us both! 6y
IljaRianca @BarbaraTheBibliophage wish we could share some of that rain! 6y

1. Dry. Humidity hates my hair and makes me look like Roseanne Roseannadanna. ?
2. April and October. Love seeing flowers bring new life in the spring, and love the colors of fall.
3. It sure seems that way. This year has flown by!
4. Any word meant to degrade...the "n word", the "c word". They make me cringe.

BarbaraTheBibliophage My hair has been looking the same. So over it and ready for fall weather. But then I get the feeling time moves so fast that it‘ll be here before I know it. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks for playing along! Golf is getting no love today. 😜❤️ 6y
Cathythoughts @BarbaraTheBibliophage poor golf !!! My father played all his life. I just never had any interest! ❤️ 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cathythoughts My mom and I watched when I was in high school. During our very cold snowy winters, we wanted to see the sunshine. So 15 years later when I met my favorite golfer, it just seemed normal. Of course, he takes it to extremes and watches way more than mom and I ever did. 😜 6y
