The Good Pilot Peter Woodhouse
The Good Pilot Peter Woodhouse: A Novel | Alexander McCall Smith
4 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
From the beloved and best-selling author of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series comes a heartwarming tale of hope and friendship set amid the turmoil of World War II. Val Eliot, a young woman working on an English farm during the war, meets Mike, a U.S. Air Force pilot stationed nearby. When Val rescues a Border Collie named Peter Woodhouse, who is being mistreated by his owner, she realizes the dog would actually be safer with Mike. And so Peter Woodhouse finds a new home on the air force base, and Val finds herself falling in love. Peter Woodhouse becomes Dog First Class, a canine mascot on the base who boldly accompanies the officers on their missions, and Val becomes Mikes fiance. But then a disaster jeopardizes the future of them all, and Peter Woodhouse brings Ubi, a German corporal, into their orbit, sparking a friendship that comes with great risk but carries with it the richest of rewards. Infused with Alexander McCall Smiths renowned charm and warmth, The Good Pilot Peter Woodhouse is an uplifting story of love and the power of friendship to bring sworn enemies together.

#7Days7Covers. Day 6 of #CoverCrush

Here‘s my Day 6 cover.

EadieB Very nicely done cover. One author writing about another! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I love Alexander McCall Smiths book and really enjoyed this one in the Summer. A great audiobook. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I'll have to check it out. I'm working on the series tracker list that I started in Jan. 2018 on LibraryThing. I'm glad I made the lists as Fict/Fact was discontinued and now I have to rely on Fantastic Fiction. (edited) 5y

Andrew65 @EadieB Yes I need to catch up and update my series list too, well overdue! That was a shock about Fict Fact! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes and they didn't give us much notice it was here today and gone tomorrow. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Love it!!! How are you? 5y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Not too bad a day today, especially given how bad the pains were over the weekend. Think the endoscopy upset the system and fasting period didn‘t help the suspected gallstones. One bit of advice I‘ve seen is to eat regularly but small meals. Hopefully settled down again until I can have the ultrasound on Saturday. Thanks for asking. 💓 (edited) 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 I‘m glad you had a better day ❤️🙏🏻 5y
gradcat Hey—this is a McCall Smith that I know absolutely nothing about (well, I do know about Wodehouse—just not about the McCall Smith writing about him), AND it‘s a beautiful cover! Sorry you‘re not quite up to speed yet...hopefully things will get better soon. 🙏 ♥️ 📚 (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat I had never seen or heard about this one until I came across it on the e-audiobook section of my library. Loved it! 5y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Me too, because awful Saturday afternoon, evening and Sunday morning. Not touched a chip in weeks. 😔 🍟 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Sorry to see you are still having some bad days! 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 oh no!! I love chips! 5y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Me too, went to the beach on Sunday and couldn‘t have fish and chips, that is just total sacrilege! Eating plenty of poached or grilled chicken, and never eaten so much salad in my life. Starting to look like fruit and veg! Not eaten are cakes or sweet things since 19th July. Lost a fair bit of weight as a result of these changes in diet and now using braces! 😂 (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, thankfully been a lot better since Sunday afternoon! Now just to wait for the ultrasound scan on Saturday, only 3 - 4 days now. 5y
gradcat I, too, love chips 🍟 and I feel terrible for you! 5y
EadieB @gradcat You do know that @Andrew65 is talking about French Fries. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Biggest problem missing chips covered in salt and vinegar, and other big miss garlic bread, pizza and chicken wings (due to the skin). Missing these more than sweet things or cakes. @EadieB 5y
gradcat @EadieB Yes, see my little “fries” emoji? 😂 (edited) 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 I much prefer savory to sweet...give me salt, lotsa 🧂 😂 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat That‘s me increasingly too, but not able to eat a lot of my savoury things at the moment either. 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 I know, sorry for you... I wonder why we change like that. I used to have to have sweets...now I really pass them over so easily. But push something salty on me, and I can‘t refuse! 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Strange how we change as we get older. 5y
EadieB @gradcat @Andrew65 I can‘t have too much salt as not good for my blood pressure but I do love sweets but I just cut back on bread and sweets. 5y
gradcat @EadieB & @Andrew65 My blood pressure is really low... 110/70...or thereabouts usually. ♥️ 5y
EadieB @gradcat High blood pressure runs in my family. 5y
gradcat @EadieB So sorry, Eadie. I think I‘m pretty lucky about those kinds of things. Diabetes runs in mind, but it missed me! 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat You sound like my wife. 5y
Andrew65 High cholesterol runs in my family - mum heart attack in 50s, dad fatal stroke at 42. My blood pressure is slightly raised but with tablet maintaining around gradcat‘s level. @EadieB @gradcat Only been on tablets since Easter. Without usually mid 120s to mid 130s. Although if doctor measures it, it is always inflated! (edited) 5y
gradcat Omigod, @Andrew65 so sorry about your father...you must‘ve been terribly young, right? Is your mother still alive? 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Yes dad died when I was six in 1972 so don‘t really have any memory of him. Unbelievably my mum died almost seven years ago following heart complications after a hysterectomy. 5y
gradcat Omigod, @Andrew65 ... that‘s a lot to shoulder. Do you have kids? (I know, I ask lots of questions—forgive me—just tell me to “knock it off” if it gets too personal for you. 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat No problem, two grown up children who are both sergeants in the Royal Air Force. That‘s how I get a lot of reading time. They have literally flown the nest. 😂 5y
gradcat Quite literally, right? I‘m very impressed that they‘re both serving their country...♥️ 5y

I had such hopes for this one. It‘s by the creator of the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency! It‘s got pilots in it!! And a dog!!! What‘s not to like? But sadly it was a bit of a disappointment. Very little in the way of character development, huge gaps in the storyline, and what you would think were major plot developments glossed over in seconds.

Started listening to this wartime romance. Always enjoy Alexander McCall Smith‘s books so should be a good listening experience. A good start to the book.

Crazeedi I like this author too, I'll have to check this out 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Just finished this one and really enjoyed it. Quite a short book, only 6 hours as audio. 5y
