Set in 1981 Guatemala, a lyrical debut novel tells the powerful tale of a boy who must decide what it means to be a man during a time of war. Carlos knows that when the soldiers arrive with warnings about the Communist rebels, it is time to be a man and defend the village, keep everyone safe. But Mama tells him not yet he s still her quiet moonfaced boy. The soldiers laugh at the villagers, and before they move on, a neighbor is found dangling from a tree, a sign on his neck: "Communist." Mama tells Carlos to run and hide, then try to find her. . . . Numb and alone, he must join a band of guerillas as they trek to the top of the mountain where Carlos s "abuela "lives. Will he be in time, and brave enough, to warn them about the soldiers? What will he do then? A novel in verse inspired by actual events during Guatemala s civil war, "Caminar "is the moving story of a boy who loses nearly everything before discovering who he really is."

Beautiful novel in verse with setting in 1981 Guatemala and based on actual events. In a deadly struggle between guérillas and ‘Communist rebels‘, it is always the families and villages who get caught in the crossfire. Courageous young Carlos understands this is his time to defend his village and get the vulnerable innocents to safety. Heartbreaking, credible, and so well written.

Poetic narrative of a boy who survives a massacre. For the life of me, if people would just read, surely they could see why we need to treat refugees better. And because of my other #FoodandLit reads, I know that Americans were giving money to the army, not caring that villagers were being massacred, just because we were fighting communism. #Guatemala @Texreader @Catsandbooks

Texreader I hate communism. I think it devours individuals whole (for example, having read Stalin‘s daughter‘s book for #Russia). But the things America has done in the name of defeating communism (ie South Korea & Vietnam) are so awful and sad. It makes the alternative, democracy, seem equally despicable. It‘s repulsive the things our “leaders” have done. 3y
TheBookHippie @Texreader it all makes me vomit…. 3y
TheBookHippie This book was a good read. Should be required reading for teens. 3y

A heartbreaking YA novel set in verse. I am glad to have read it, and will recommend my son read it before I take it back to the library. #FoodAndLit set in Guatemala

TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk my 15 year old son read it before I brought it back to the library. He has a girl in his class from Guatemala so he was interested. 3y

I started at work, continued while at the chiropractor, picked it up while dinner cooked, again after D was in bed and husband watched TV, finished while hair dried. If life didn't have to happen, I would have finished in one sitting! I truly cared about Carlos.
I was drawn to this story part because of my current #litsygoespostalog selection, part because #litsypoetry365 and part #Notawhiteprotagonist

For me, gets all the ✨

Next #novelinverse for me. I love what the author did with this poem. Do you see it?

There are so many novels in verse to get to and not enough time!

A beautiful and short book, written completely in poetry, Caminar tells the story of a young boy during Guatemala's civil war, and the havoc it wrecked on the lives of many. Beautiful middle grade novel that does a wonderful job of being haunting and factual without being overly graphic. Love
