The Illusion of Separateness
The Illusion of Separateness | Simon Van Booy
17 posts | 25 read | 11 to read
In The Illusion of Separateness, award-winning author Simon Van Booy tells the haunting and luminous story of how one mans act of mercy on a World War II battlefield changes the lives of six strangers across time and place. From wartime Britain and Nazi-occupied France, to modern-day Los Angeles, the characters of this gripping novel inspired by true events include a child on the brink of starvation, a blind museum curator looking for love, a German infantryman, and a humble caretaker at a retirement home in Santa Monica. Whether they are pursued by old age, shame, disease, or regret, these incandescent characters remain unaware of their connection until seemingly random acts of selflessness lift a veil to reveal the vital parts they play in each others lives.

Quick read, compelling. Beautifully and sparely written.

Read for a faculty book club that I won't actually be able to attend now due to a doctor's appointment - oh well, at least it was a quick read! I got what the author was attempting to do with the themes of connection, but I don't think it was executed very well, mostly because I forgot who was who with all the jumps in point of view.

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards The most interesting part for me was the job position of creating accessible versions of exhibits for the blind - sounds like a very cool prospect. 2y

I devoured this short novel about how a seemingly diverse group of people past and present are connected. The language is incredible- so much emotion packed into each sentence, every word has a purpose. So very glad my mom sent it along.

I started this book in 2017 and finished it in 2018. I like the concept but was hoping for more of a story. i was only interested in a couple of the characters and would have liked to learn more about them. I almost bailed but I am glad I finished!! #frommymomsTBR

Unusual arrangement but satisfying. Sometimes I was confused with the many characters and the intricate ways in which they were connected.

The writing style of this book took a little getting used to, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it.

He realized that what people think are their lives are merely its conditions. The truth is closer than thought and lies buried in what we already know.

It took me longer than I wanted to finish this book but returning to these characters was exciting each time. If I had to pick a con for this book it'd be i wanted more. The story is interwoven through many different characters but still remains simple.

Easily one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. It flits between characters and storylines but you're never left feeling lost or abandoned. Filled with spectacular nuggets of truth about life that will leave you with highlighter stains on your fingers.

Devyn @Coleen Isn't it?! It was one of those where I had to set the book down for a second to appreciate it before continuing. So simple but so great. 8y
