While brushing my teeth I thought about it.
It‘s no bad or boring book – no. Technically it‘s brilliant but it didn‘t get me at all. Maybe because I read about feelings but felt them seldomly while reading. Which is a weird criticism because it perfectly fits Jason with his will to tame his demons. 🤷🏽‍♀️
Overall it‘s like the story wants to be touching so badly that it „overacts”. If you get what I mean.

(Maybe mean but that‘s how I feel.)

The review that made me want to read the book (🇩🇪). I am a bit disappointed. I expected more – but I can‘t say what exactly. Van Booy is a calm narrator, I knew that but this time, for me there was no arc of suspense because the blurb spoilers the key points.
And until it occurred at the end I did forget about the „big secret” (which didn‘t convince me).
Not his best but an okay read.

Finally I managed to start this. 🙌🏼
I‘m about 40 pages in and from what I remember from „Die Illusion des Getrenntseins“ Simon Van Booy remains true to hisself. The story starts at a leisurely pace but one gets hints for one or two secrets fast.

Yupp, I think Iike it.

No, I didn‘t start Simon Van Booy‘s book today. 😟
I had a _very_ busy day with a lot of running around and quite a huge amount of paperwork that wanted to be filled out and handed in in time, so at the moment I am just knackered … 🥺 Someone in here to brush my teeth and tuck me in❓

Buuuuut – tomorrow I will hopefully begin reading this. And yes, it still _is_ shrink wrapped 🤭 because no, it‘s s not about 15 months ago that I bought it in a bookshop at the main station on a Sunday‼️🤥

(Yes, „maybe” it is – but this is last of the four or five books I bought back then but I haven‘t read yet.)

Happy Father‘s Day to all the dads out there.

I lost my dad 8 years ago. (cancer sucks!) He was the bestest daddy & I was certainly a daddy‘s girl. I miss him every day, but particularly today and tomorrow (what would‘ve been his 73 birthday).

So if your dad is still alive, please give him a big hug and tell him how much he means to you. 🧔🏻❤️

Cinfhen Beautiful tribute 💙💙 7y
PenguinInFlight This is beautiful. ❤️❤️ I lost my dad 11 years ago to a brain aneurism. He was only 53, and it was very unexpected. I feel lucky for the 23 years I had him, but I wish I had gotten to have him longer. Thinking of you! *hugs* 7y

Hoping you all had a lovely 4th of July! (Wrong holiday book title. I know!) I got lots of reading done. Hoping to finish this by tonight. I have about 80 pages to go. Not a big fan of the cover but the book is lovely. Beautifully written. Both heartbreaking and uplifting. And the red, white and blue sangria was delish!

Okay, this is kind of a weird angle because my pinkie tipped forward a bit while I was doing it, but this is the wax hand I made my husband for Father's Day @britt_brooke ! My son's looks more like a claw, and he refused to give it to my husband because he thought it would be his toy...guess I wasn't very clear about it. 😆

Robothugs 😂 That's cute (your son)! This was very creative! 8y
britt_brooke How cool!! Thanks for sharing. I definitely want to try this with my boys! 8y
readinginthedark @Robothugs @britt_brooke Thanks! It wasn't actually much work on my part, 'cause we just went to an art studio where they have the wax vat and set it up for you. You might be able to do it at home, but make sure you use ice water to get your hand really cold first, and then dip quickly several times so you don't burn yourself! 8y

I gave up on this one. Flat dialogue, maudlin story, and weird plot contradictions (the grandparents are filling out adoption papers! Wait, they're dead!) left me feeling like I should move on to a new book.

Harvey is 6 when her parents die in an accident. The closest relative is her unknown, ex-con of an uncle, Jason. Does he want custody, the social worker asks. It's an imperfect novel - the unsatisfying 20-years-later part and last-minute plot twist almost ruined it. I still highly recommend it for its pitch-perfect, unsentimental, tender heart: a desperate little girl holding her wee hand out to a broken man, him slowly, warily reaching back.

This is very sweet and thoughtful read. The pace was slow and steady. I absolutely fell in love with the characters. It may have tied up a little too nicely at the end, but I am totally ok with it.

Lindy 12! That's impressive. Learning about other hardcore readers' habits is why I love hanging out on Litsy. 8y
SusanInTiburon At the moment I have 6 I think of as "current" and 9 or 10 more I think of as long-term ... 8y
LindaGrace812 You literary polygamists are amazing! I can do one fiction and one nonfiction at a time, and that's my limit. I am very much a one-thing-at-a-time person across my entire life. I always tell my husband that this is why he doesn't ever need to worry about me cheating on him! 😜 8y

Father‘s Day is a gentle and absorbing story about a woman named Harvey and her adoptive father, a felon with a violent past. Shifting between scenes of Harvey as a girl and as a self-assured woman in Paris, Father‘s Day is a meditation on the immense effect one human life can have on another. -Kat

However I am slowly but surely working on Father's Day and enjoying it so far.

My sister sent me this and I thought it was a good one 👍🏽

This is a beautiful story of a father and daughter and the love between them. My only major critique is that I think I don't like the unveiled twist at the end. I like the story more, I think, without this new fact added to the context. But beautiful writing and adorable quotes from the little girl.
