Celestina
Celestina | Fernando De Rojas
3 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
The racy and irreverent Spanish tragicomedy that is considered the first European novel-in a spirited new translation A Spanish "Romeo and Juliet," "Celestina" was published in 1499 and became Spain's first-ever bestseller. Readers thrilled to the salty character of Celestina and her world of prostitutes and black magic even as they mourned the fate of Calisto and Melibea, the young lovers she unites using her wiles as a seller of perfumes and potions. Fernando de Rojas's exhilarating mix of street wit, obscenity, and cultured rhetoric mark "Celestina" as a masterpiece: an original, explosive, genre-defying work that paved the way for the picaresque novel and for Cervantes.

Occasional Weekly Report:

I just got back from a chill family visit, reading almost a book a day. So, I've finished The Romantics (quiet, bittersweet), The Restless (interesting structure), After the Death of Don Juan (longish postscript of a well known story), The Tree of Man (stoic view of Australian frontier), and Laidlaw (early Scottish noir).

Still reading Clarissa and almost done with the tagged book.

La Celestina / Celestina | Fernando De Rojas
Pickpick

I loved reading this book since it shows the battling of ideals between the Medieval and the Renaissance periods, personified through different characters in the play.

La Celestina, though a Spanish book, is a very dark, witty version of Romeo and Juliet with twisted matchmaking. A red velvet cupcake and a hot chocolate make all the drama more fun.
