My final book of 2019 ended a good year of reading with a novel about Iraq 1915-1920, a period which shaped the future of the country and the middle east as GB + Fr carved the country in two betraying promises of independence. Told from the perspective of Ahmad and his family he returns from fighting with the ottoman empire. Conflicted by treatment of Armenian + jewish neighbours he joins the British army to fight the ottoman invaders.⏬

I started the new challenge with a millennial author who, a welsh/Iraqi reporter, was 16 when iraq was invaded in 2003. I saw her name on the Betty Trask award list, a prize for under 35's, and so far its a fascinating picture of a historical period 1915-1920 iraq from the view of an Iraqi family +welsh soldier. The joy of this challenge is finding such diverse gems, rvw 2 follow.
