I love this beautiful story about young Langston. He has difficulty in adapting to his new life in Chicago, gets bullied in school, feels lonely in the crowded city, & misses Alabama very much, especially his mother, whom has just passed away. By chance, he stumbles upon the library, where he finds solace in books & poetry, discovers black writers-among them, a poet with whom he shares the same name.#MiddleGradeMarch #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime

erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve read of the Harlem Renaissance, this book got me down the rabbit hole when I looked up the Chicago Black Renaissance. 2y

🌟🌟🌟🌟
An interesting story about Langston who has moved from Alabama to Chicago, Illinois during the Great Migration. I loved the father-son relationship in this one. There are lots of great storylines, especially all the time spent in his local library. The only downside is the book was too short.
@megnews #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime

megnews I wanted it to be longer too. But I enjoyed the book, loved Langston and all the time he spent in the library. This month I‘m going to try to get to 2y
sblbooks I definitely want to read all three in the trilogy. @megnews 2y

Cline-Ransome does an excellent job of capturing the trapped, powerless feeling of dread so common during the middle school years, even without the specific challenges Langston faces, and the experience of finding relief and freedom through literature. The main downside is that the ending is somewhat abrupt. I listened to this with my son and we both felt like the story was just picking up steam when it ended.

ImperfectCJ And...I just found out that this is the first in a trilogy, which could be why it seems to stop quickly. 3y

Well this was glorious. Young boy moves to Chicago from Alabama after the death of his mother and after struggling to settle in in school and in the different ways the north is racist until he finds solace at the library.

When life suddenly paused and schools closed, I scrambled to create lessons for my students when most of them left their novels in the building they can no longer access. I utilized Epic! and selected this book for my students to read. Langston and his father moved from Alabama to Chicago during the Great Migration. Langston struggles to adjust but finds solace in the library and especially, the poetry of Langston Hughes.

This book derived the life of a young boy Langston and the obstacles he faces as a child such as his mother passing away. Both the great migration and Idea of segregation are well presented throughout the book. This is a great story as it tells of a younger g man who was named after the great poet, Langston Hughes and intertwines his life as well.

Excellent middle grade historical fiction about a boy who moves from Alabama to Chicago in 1946 after his mother died. He misses his mother and Alabama and struggles to adjust to city life. He's also bullied at school for being "country." He finds solace and peace at the library where he discovers the work of Langston Hughes after whom he's named.

Young Langston loses his mom and he & his dad move from Alabama to #Chicago in the #GreatMigration. Langston deals with bullies, finds a #library retreat where much of this book is set, and ultimately learns of his namesake Langston Hughes and the healing power of #poetry. I fell in love with this character and was rooting for him throughout.

I gave this #middlegrade novel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

It‘s better to read in the library. Sitting at my favorite table by the window reading and listening to the sound of other folks turning pages makes me feel like I‘m in a house full of company I don‘t have to talk to.

I think this is such a neat way to incorporate a poet and the Great Migration into one story. It‘s like a self discovery but also a discovery of literature and poetry.

Interested in Finding Langston? Get ready to step into the shoes of a young African American boy living in Chicago post WWII! In this Coretta Scott Kjng award winning HF novel, Lesa Cline-Ransome takes readers back to the 60‘s as a young boy named Langston. Uplifting and empowering, this novel shows how one boy‘s love reading and poetry helped him overcome his day-to-day struggles. #LAE3414sp19

hkeiger Though there are many different activities and assignments that would go GREAT with this book, I would definitely use Finding Langston as an LC in my classroom. It would be beneficial to include this in an LC to promote positive thinking and collaboration between students about a tough subject. https://www.varsitytutors.com/englishteacher/hughes (UDL 5.3, ESOL 10) 5y

Set in post WWII Chicago, Langston battles loneliness, culture shock, and grief. When he finds the library and the poetry by “colored” poets, he finds a link to his Alabama home and mother. This is so good. You will find something of your middle-grade self in this wonderful novel. A wonderful way to teach The Great Migration, share-cropping and Jim Crow, poetry, and the artists of Harlem.

SleepyDragon I just read the chapter in Obama's "Becoming" in which she talks about the connection to the South and the Great Migration. How serendipitous to see your post in my feed mere hours later. 5y
Nebklvr @NeesyBeth I loved this book. And the audio is superb!! I need to read nonfiction Wilkerson book yet 5y
SleepyDragon I also read Homegoing last year, which also includes a fictional account of someone who took part in the migration. That one lived up to the hype. 5y
Nebklvr @NeesyBeth That one is on my TBR. I had to wait for the hype to die down but will move it up now.🤗 5y
