Innocence
Innocence | Penelope Fitzgerald
3 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
A delectable comedy of manners set in 1950s Florence, by the Booker Prizewinning author of Offshore (The Boston Globe). Its 1955, and Italy is still struggling a decade after the end of World War II. So are the Ridolfis, a Florentine family of long and fading noble lineage. Like their decrepit villa, theyve seen better days. Only eighteen-year-old Chiara shows anything like vitalityhowever impulsive and perilously nave. Chiara has set her heart and her future on Salvatore Rossi, a brilliant, penniless young doctor and bull-headed son of a Communist, who has erased both politics and romance from his list of priorities. With her plans stymied, Chiara calls on her resourceful and meddlesome British girlfriend, Barney, to help make an impossible match. Now, out of good intentions and the most innocent of instincts, two guileless friends are going to make a series of astonishingly wrong moves in the name of love. From a winner of multiple major literary awards who was called the best English novelist of her time by Julian Barnes, Innocence is a novel not just about Italians in love but of living and loving for all humans (The Times). As intoxicating as a shot of aged brandy. The Washington Post

I‘m learning Penelope Fitzgerald was a special writer. Fell in love with The Blue Flower earlier this year, and have now read this one - a bad good marriage in 1950‘s Florence with a doctor too rational to acknowledge his emotions. Ok, that‘s humble. Now hand it over to Penelope and her backhanded, almost absurd, striking lines. 🥰

Suet624 I‘ll have to check this out! 1w
Graywacke @Suet624 it‘s great stuff. Penny is awesome. 1w
sarahbarnes I haven‘t read her yet, although I have a copy of Offshore. This sounds good. (edited) 1w
Graywacke @sarahbarnes I would like to read Offshore. This one was fantastic. 1w

Guess I'll be reading some Penelope Fitzgerald! Part of my haul from the library sale today.
I'm stashing it in the laundry room for now. A safe place since no one else ever comes in here. 🙄😜

MemoirsForMe 🤣🤣🤣 6y
erzascarletbookgasm There‘s something satisfying in finding many books of the author in the same edition 👍 6y

Theaelizabet I have those, too! I forget where I got them, but maybe Book Depository? I‘ve been reading them in order (occasionally) and I‘m up to Human Voices. If you ever want to buddy read one, let me know. 6y
merelybookish @erzascarletbookgasm @leahbergen Yes, pretty hard to resist! Especially since Fitzgerald is a writer I'd like to read! 6y
merelybookish @Cathythoughts They do make a pretty stack! 🙂 I've only read The Bookshop. And I think she won the Booker for one of them but can't remember which one. Her writing is VERY tight! 6y
merelybookish @readordierachel @Soubhiville Thanks! They will look nice on my shelf once I get them past my husband! 😁 6y
merelybookish @Theaelizabet Sounds good! I have only read The Bookshop. What one have you liked best so far? Let me know when you start your next one and perhaps I'll join you! 🙂 6y
Theaelizabet @merelybookish I loved The Bookshop (many say it and The Blue Flower are her best) and really liked Offshore. I‘ve read The Golden Child, which is sort of fun. It was her first book and if I remember correctly, it was written to entertain her husband during his last illness. 6y
Graywacke Wow! 😍 How far did you get? 1w
merelybookish @Graywacke Would you believe I've only read one? 😳🙈 1w
Graywacke Which one?! 1w
merelybookish @Graywacke The Bookshop. Are you reading her right now? 1w
