The Second World War
The Second World War | John Keegan
5 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
In this comprehensive history, John Keegan explores both the technical and the human impact of the greatest war of all time. He focuses on five crucial battles and offers new insights into the distinctive methods and motivations of modern warfare. In knowledgable, perceptive analysis of the airborne battle of Crete, the carrier battle of Midway, the tank battle of Falaise, the city battle of Berlin, and the amphibious battle of Okinawa, Keegan illuminates the strategic dilemmas faced by the leaders and the consequences of their decisions on the fighting men and the course of the war as a whole.

I‘m in #heaven. When the auctioneer asked “does anyone have $22.50” for ELEVEN boxes of WWII/military history books I said #idoidoidoidoido and then I got these footlockers for $20 each! I‘m sorting out my haul and will take photos of some stacks later. There are some excellent books, some super old books, and a box I‘m referring to as the “Fox News” box that will go to Goodwill. #augustisatrip #abbainaugust

@Andrew65 has an interesting discussion about chunksters and what counts as a chunky book. For me I feel anything over 400 pages is chunky but I have a short attention span😂. Looking at some of my books, WW2 is only 595 pages but it has very few pictures and bigger pages then Goblet of Fire which has 725. But the subject matter is different. WW2 is textbook, HP is JF, & City of Heavenly Fire is YA and sits at 796 pages. ⬇️

LibrarianJen Then there is Heart of Darkness a measly 72 pages but I know for a fact I read WW2 faster than stupid Joseph Conrad. (Sorry for those of you who liked it, I really didn‘t). So I think it‘s a matter of personal reading style, genre and reading level. For me, if I can‘t fit it into my purse, it‘s probably too big. 7y
Andrew65 Certainly become apparent a hard and fast rule is hard to come by, and needs to be based on reading style, length of book, subject matter, etc. 7y
LibrarianJen @Andrew65 Yes! Although I think there are a few titles everyone can agree are automatically chunksters like Game of Thrones, Ana Kerenina and Middlemarch. 7y
Andrew65 @LibrarianJen Most Definitely! 7y

Recently found a bundle of documents that belonged to my grandmother during World War II.
Turns out she kept every single letter my grandfather sent her when she was in Egypt as a Junior Commander!
And they're SO romantic! He writes poems about her, talks about wanting to give her the sun, moon and stars and about how much he misses her 😩😍
I can't believe they were so romantic ❤️

Hollie Aw, I love this! 7y
Bookzombie So sweet! ❤️ 7y
JazzFeathers That's so sweet. My great-grandfather was a theatre actor. He kept a notebook of all the places where he went to actually fron 1901 (he made the not ebook himself by bordino lose paper together). Through two WWs an up to his death in the 1950s. There isn't much in terms of true diary, but l treasure it anyway. 7y
