A Grave Talent: A Novel | Laurie R. King
7 posts | 13 read | 13 to read
THE FIRST BOOK IN THE KATE MARTINELLI MYSTERY SERIES In Laurie R. King's Grave Talent, the unthinkable has happened in a small community outside of San Francisco. A series of shocking murders has occurred, the victims far too innocent and defenseless. For lesbian Detective Kate Martinelli, just promoted to Homicide and paired with a seasoned cop who's less than thrilled to be handed a green partner, it's a difficult case that just keeps getting harder. Then the police receive what appears to be a case-breaking lead: it seems that one of the residents of this odd colony is Vaun Adams, arguably the century's greatest woman painter and a notorious felon once convicted of a heinous crime. But what really happened eighteen years ago? To bring a murderer to justice, Kate must delve into the artist's dark past--even if it means losing everything she holds dear.

Will have to find a new detective to keep me company while I wait for the next Helen Grace installment. This one has some big shoes to fill but I‘m cautiously optimistic. #StartASeries

DGRachel I love her Holmes/Mary Russell series, but never got into the Kate Martinelli books. I think @dsfisher has read them all, though, and if I remember correctly, she‘s a fan. 6y
Notafraidofwords Are you still staying away from the library? 6y
dsfisher I did like the Kate Martinelli series. I don‘t remember how many there were. 6y
MicheleinPhilly @Notafraidofwords Yes ma‘am! ☺️ 6y
Notafraidofwords @MicheleinPhilly I‘m so impressed. 6y

Because I don't have enough books to read #lies and I certainly don't have enough series to start and/or finish #morelies, I went on a little #startaseries binge. Some purchases were inspired by @DeborahSmall @TrishB and @nomadreader 📚📚📚📚

nomadreader I will gladly take credit for Allison Leotta! It's a series that improves with each book and really builds the character and stories book to book. I wanted to like A Report for Murder but did not. Very curious what you think of all of them. 7y
nomadreader Also, A Grave Talent is an old favorite. I've been meaning to reread the Kate Martinelli series! 7y
MicheleinPhilly @nomadreader I'm excited for them. I'll usually give a series 1 or 2 books depending on reviews of later entries. For instance I LOATHED the first Harry Hole book. Speaking of series I have to catch up on...😬 7y

bookishkai The Kate Martinelli books are my go-to comfort reads/listens (they're fabulous on audio). 7y
MicheleinPhilly @nomadreader Also considering starting Harry Bosch because of your pregnancy binge. ☺️ 7y
nomadreader Do it! Bosch is my favorite. And Connelly's new series (beginning with ) is really exciting and features a young female detective. He writes the best mysteries. 7y
MicheleinPhilly @nomadreader Twist my arm. ☺️I'd like to check out the Amazon show too. Do I need to read the books first? 7y
MicheleinPhilly @bookishkris 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼I'm looking forward to it! 7y
nomadreader Not necessarily. The show plays with timeline and characters a bit. Each season takes 2-3 novels (not in order) as source material, so some elements of the books will be spoiled if you watch first. I'd recommend reading the first three before watching. That's enough to get invested in the book timeline and let them be two separate, but related experiences. And Titus Welliver is AMAZING. 7y
saresmoore Super fun!! 7y
LauraBeth These all sound good 😀 7y
TrishB The Bosch books are amazing - I so recommend these too 😀 enjoy! 7y
DeborahSmall John Connolly is amazing. I'd love to be reading him for the first time again. 💕 7y

I've read the book so many times that the audio is my go-to listening when I'm deep into a brain-melting migraine; the narrator is gentle and I don't have to listen very hard. I love this book: the slow reveals and introductions to the main characters, the mystery, the unique setting. This series is one of my top recommends.

Yamich49 *Goes to read the book description, sees the line " For lesbian Detective Kate Martinelli"... immediately puts the book on all my to-read lists. ✔️ 8y
ValentineWiggin I love almost everything I've read by Laurie R. King. She's a wonderful writer. 8y

Rereading King's Kate Martinelli series and I'd forgotten how nuanced the plots are and how empathetic Kate is. If anyone has suggestions for similar series, I'd love to hear them (I'm already a fan of King's Russell/Holmes series.)
