Jeeves and the King of Clubs
Jeeves and the King of Clubs | Ben Schott
17 posts | 10 read | 10 to read
'Impossible to read without grinning idiotically' - Mark Sanderson, Evening Standard Storm clouds loom over Europe. Treason is afoot in the highest social circles. The very security of the nation is in peril. Jeeves, it transpires, has long been an agent of British Intelligence, but now His Majesty's Government must turn to the one man who can help . . . Bertie Wooster. In this magnificent new homage to P. G. Wodehouse, Ben Schott leads Jeeves and Wooster on an uproarious adventure of espionage through the secret corridors of Whitehall, the sunlit lawns of Brinkley Court, and the private clubs of St James's. We encounter an unforgettable cast of characters old and new including outraged chefs and exasperated aunts, disreputable politicians and gambling bankers, slushy debs and Cockney cabbies, sphinx-like tailors, and sylph-like spies. There is treachery to be foiled, naturally, but also horses to be backed, auctions to be fixed, engagements to be escaped, madmen to be blackballed, and a new variety of condiment to be cooked up. Jeeves & the King of Clubs is essential reading for aficionados of The Master, and a perfect introduction to the joys of Jeeves and Wooster for those who have never before dipped their toe.

A solid pick if you need a fantastic palate cleanser 👍🏻 Ben Schott did a great job of “becoming” P.G Wodehouse, I felt as if I was reading an original P.G Wodehouse book, not a tribute written in 2018. Definitely a pick!!

Disappointing... I went through a P. G. Wodehouse phase a few years ago. This novel starts off with some wit and vigor, but the plot just fizzles and I could have used more Jeeves and less Bertie. (I did read the book in the voices of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.)

All of a sudden, in the midst of a romp, feelings about current events breaks through.
“If his mannerisms were histrionic, his message was gibberish. ‘We must be ceaseless in our fight to Keep Britain Great,‘ he kept repeating. ‘The British way of life, the British sense of fair play, the British love of Britishness.‘
“It‘s as if he has a vocabulary of 30 words...
‘How does he do that with his hair?‘ Asked Iona.
‘A better question would be: Why?‘

Like the impetuous searcher at the end of ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade‘, I chose poorly here. Rather a woeful start to a year‘s reading, and one that is particularly annoying because my disappointment might so easily have been predicted. 5⭐️ Just a smashing good book. I lost count of the times I laughed out loud, guffawed, and snickered at Bertie‘s antics and predicaments. Schott has done just a magnificent job in his homage to Wodehouse. This truly is a perfect book to lift your spirits.
Tinkety-tonk!

❄️A fresh blanket of snow popped me back in bed with a cuppa of Earl Grey.

This book is proving to be a real treat. I‘ve laughed out loud a few times and have pretty much been reading with a permagrin on my face.

readinginthedark Permagrin! 😆 6y

🍸”I was idling away the pre-cocktail ennui...”

Loving this first line. He‘s put into words perfectly a feeling I‘ve had many times. 😏

Positively ripping! A worthy homage to Plum. With pre-WWII espionage afoot the stakes of this caper are potentially higher than previous. I was worried this would upset the usual joyous farce but Schott avoided it adroitly. Full of the usual madcap disguises, blunders and ploys, Bertie-isms ("if that's the word I want") and he writes J&W to a tee. Impressive and wholly enjoyable

LeahBergen Oh, good to hear! 👏🏻 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen there was much snickering. Thoroughly enjoyable 6y

Not only did I use Sayers for a prompt today my mother also ordered the Folio Society collection for my Christmas present. Love books within books

Leniverse I think I remember the phrase "clouds of witnesses" from my recent reading of the Bible. Which is probably where Sayers got it from. But this reminds me that I haven't read that particular Sayers yet, but I did get a copy in a book sale a few weeks back. ? Looking forward to it. 6y
Leniverse Ah, yes. Hebrews 12.1. I knew it was something towards the end. 6y
Moray_Reads @Leniverse that's an impressive memory! I recognised the quote, but from Sayers not the Bible 6y
Leniverse I did read it pretty recently. And while I didn‘t make the Sayers connection at the time, it probably stuck in my mind because my subconscious was aware of the title. (I had to look it up to discover it was Hebrews. I def can‘t randomly quote chapter and verse. 😅) 6y
Moray_Reads @Leniverse I would only be impressed if you could! It's strange what sticks in the memory sometimes 6y

This one's probably a risk but since I asked my library to but it in buying the bullet and honouring my commitment. I hope Schott gets this right!

Is it even possible to go to the library and NOT come out with more books than you went in with? These are brand new acquisitions and were already on my tbr. 🤞 for the Wodehouse homage...

As a rule, my view on “continuation” novels is No. That being said - and I‘m as surprised as you are - I enjoyed this. I finished in three days and laughed out loud more than once. You‘d never mistake it for Wodehouse, but that just means you can enjoy it without feeling like you‘re aiding and abetting in an act of sacrilege. A very creditable Christmas present / the winter equivalent of a beach read.
