The Accidental Buddhist
The Accidental Buddhist: Mindfulness, Enlightenment, and Sitting Still | Dinty W. Moore
4 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
A journey through the diverse landscape of American Buddhism, written with a blessedly down-to-earth sense of humor (Rodger Kamenetz, author of The Jew in the Lotus). In an era when many of us yearn for an escape from a culture of noise and narcissism, this book takes us into the physical and spiritual geography of Buddhism, American-style: from a weekend at a mountain retreat for corporate executives learning effective ways to cope with stress, to a visit with a Zen teacher holding classes in an old Quaker farmhouse, to a meeting with a Catholic priest whos also a Zen master. Both a lively introduction to this Eastern spiritual tradition and a colorful portrait of American society, The Accidental Buddhist makes the oftentimes impenetrable concepts of Buddhism accessible to the reader and contains striking, and important, parallels and contrasts between [the authors] own Catholic upbringing and ancient Buddhist traditions (Library Journal). A travelogue detailing the tremendous diversity within American Buddhism. His anecdotes make it clear that the umbrella term Buddhist encompasses strict Zen monks, laid-back Tibetan politicos, and beatnik holdover Allen Ginsberg. In his travels, Moore attends weekend retreats, chronicles the Dalai Lamas 1996 visit to Indiana, and grooves to Change Your Mind Day, a meditative Buddha-fest in New York Citys Central Park. . . . He finds that his family is his sangha (monastery), and while he still feels he is probably a fairly lousy Buddhist, he will eclectically combine his various forms of new knowledge to find a path that makes sense to him. Now that may be an authentic American Buddhism. Kirkus Reviews

Liked it. A little older (he uses the term "cellular phone", lol) but still relevant for those exploring Buddhism. He is funny too.

I needed this book right now. I‘ve been reading some heavy books lately and Moore made me chuckle and reminded me to just sit and listen to the deep silence. Kindness, compassion, and awareness are the goals. And is this really the author‘s name? Because I remember my brother eating Dinty Moore beef stew straight out of the can over 50 years ago and my mother yelling at him to at least heat it up first!

saresmoore That was my first thought about the author‘s name, too! This sounds like a fun read. 6y

I‘m exhausted from watching an 18 inning baseball game that ended after 3 am. My team lost. 😩 Getting snow tires put on and reading this book. Of course I‘m also nodding off and dropping the book on the floor. The man sitting on the couch has finally moved so I can stretch out.

Leftcoastzen I watched thru the 13th , then listened to the radio feed in bed ,dosed off occasionally , but heard the Muncy home run.I am amazed you were up. I am 3 hours to the west of you!Go Red Sox.😂⚾️ 6y
Bookcation74 Wow I‘m impressed you made it up the whole game! #gosox 6y
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen @Bookcation74 it‘s probably not my smartest move to stay up and I don‘t think I‘ll do it again. It messes up my Lyme Disease pretty badly. But my team needed me!!! If Nunez can fly into the stands I can stay awake on my couch. 😁 6y
Leftcoastzen Take care of your health .Though baseball can be therapeutic.😀Nunez is a gamer! Was sorry the Giants let him go, hope he gets a ring. 6y
