Life Reimagined
Life Reimagined: The Science, Art, and Opportunity of Midlife | Barbara Bradley Hagerty
11 posts | 10 read | 18 to read
There's no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. Drawing from emerging information in neurology, psychology, biology, genetics and sociology - as well as her own story of midlife transformation, Hagerty redraws the map for people in midlife and plots a new course forward in understanding our health, our relationships, even our futures. In Life Reimagined, Hagerty offers midlife renewal.

I have always loved Barbara Bradley Hagerty from her days at NPR. This book proves that there is life after midlife. We just have to dig in and enjoy.

This one tempted me because I was just a few years behind the author in high school. Or I might have been in 8th grade when she was in 12th grade. I remember her but can't say I knew her. But ... when I read the blurb and reviews, it didn't sound like the ideas were particularly new. So it becomes another of the #booksIalmostbought.

As I approach my 46th birthday, I am starting to realize that I may now be entering midlife. ?I remember watching 30 Something (tv show from the 80s) & thinking those people were so grown up. Even now, despite the fact that I am older than that, I still don't feel "grown up". I am very responsible and luckily am successful but I'm still not sure what I want to do when I grow up. So I grabbed this on Overdrive to see what my options are!

merelybookish Meghan Daum has a great essay about aging. She also references coming to terms with being older than the people on 30something. ☺️ Let us other 40 somethings know what you learn! 8y
HardcoverHearts @merelybookish - I stacked that suggestion. Thank you! And so far I am really liking this book. It's a science based self-help type book with great narration. She is a regular NPR contributor so her voice is instantly recognizable to an avid listener like me. I do recommend it- especially the audiobook. 8y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I'm 41 and feel the same way!! I shouldn't be middle aged!! Where did the time go?! 😳😱 8y

Suet624 How funny. 30something folks were my contemporaries. Loved that show. I really liked this book too. Interesting and informative with helpful suggestions. 😀 8y

This was a book club pick or I would've bailed. If you are someone struggling with midlife, this book would call to you. It's filled with research and personal stories. I couldn't keep my mind from wandering.

The full title is The Science, Art, and Opportunity of Midlife. The book is well researched and offers an interesting perspective on this time of life. The three most important ways to enjoy midlife/aging, are 1. Engage in things that are important to you. 2. Choose purpose over happiness. 3. Your thinking is your experience.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Very Wayne Dyer...Change your Thoughts, change your life...I remember someone saying (it may have been him) that a lot of these type of teachers are saying the same thing but in different ways and sometimes one person's style of relating may just "click" with you. Maybe it was someone on the You Can Heal Your Life DVD by Louise Hay...which is really good by the way!! 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Suet624 Did you listen to an audiobook of this? 8y
Suet624 @JanuarieTimewalker13, I read the hardcover. This book was based on research and is interesting. And the way I've heard it said about teachers is "we all get on different buses and end up at same place." 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Suet624 Wow!! That's great!!! I like it! 8y

Very thought provoking book about midlife. Lots of science, but Hagerty does a good job of making it understandable. I also liked the profiles of people that served as examples.
