Creatures of Want and Ruin
Creatures of Want and Ruin | Molly Tanzer

Profound and enthralling. This book is a delicate dream, mixing its own internal mythology with a brutal tale of prejudice and human frailty. I cant recommend it enough. Tanzer is absolutely one to watch. Seanan McGuire, bestselling, award-winning author of In an Absent Dream Amityville baywoman Ellie West fishes by day and bootlegs moonshine by night. Its dangerous work under Prohibitionindependent operators like her are despised by federal agents and mobsters alikebut Ellies brother was accepted to college and Ellies desperate to see him go. So desperate that when wealthy strangers ask her to procure libations for an extravagant party Ellie sells them everything she has, including some booze she acquired under unusual circumstances. What Ellie doesnt know is that this booze is special. Distilled from foul mushrooms by a cult of diabolists, those who drink it see terrible thingslike the destruction of Long Island in fire and flood. The cult is masquerading as a church promising salvation through temperance and a return to the good old days, so its hard for Ellie to take a stand against them, especially when her father joins, but Ellie loves Long Island, and she loves her family, and shell do whatever it takes to ensure neither is torn apart.

Oops. I was searching for something else at the library (don‘t remember what) and this came up in the search results. I thought it sounded like fun so I put it on hold. Today I took it out to start reading and noticed the “author of” a book with a suspiciously similar name on the cover. Sure enough, this is book 2 in a series. Why don‘t they just say that in the cover/subtitle? 🙄 Thankfully my library does have book 1 so I have it on hold now!

ravenlee That‘s always so frustrating! I need the pertinent information in the description and on the cover: what number this is in a series, series title, previous titles in said series! 3mo

More demon summoning but without the Dorian Gray inspiration and hedonism. Liked the first one better - prohibition era is one of my least favorite settings.

Characters seemed hollow and the excerpt from the next book seemed even worse.

Settings Front cover is gorgeous but very little to do with the book. Imagining what they told the artist lol. "Mushrooms. Diabolism. Female lead. Moonshine." 4y

I love both! Lately I've taken to ebook way more. I can read with just some candles for light. As well as in the dark plus I can make the font as big as I want. I still love books of course and collect my favorites. I also always travel with at least one paperback. To me though a book is a book no matter the format. ☺ #muchlove #storyisastory #instagram #bookvsebook

So I'm one of those out of sight out of mind types. So this year I did my #popsugarchallenge book prompts into a 3rd grade sticker chart type situation. Tacked it above my bedside table so I remember to follow it (as best I can) this year. 😂🖤☺ #artproject #notmyforte #muchlove #goals #2019 #icandothis #maybe #chickenscratch

Really enjoyed this creepy speculative fiction story! Sinister diabolists trying to take over Long Island in Prohibition-era, with a kickass bootleggin‘ main female character! Similar to the author‘s previous book, Creatures of Will and Temper!

Molly Tanzer succeeds wonderfully in giving young women a voice - her female characters are diverse and the driving force of the story lies in their hands. A few reasons why you'll want to read Creatures of Want and Ruin: http://bit.ly/2CZgaF2
