“Walt Whitman, a kosmos, of Manhattan the son,
Turbulent, fleshy, sensual, eating, drinking and breeding,
No sentimentalist, no stander above men and women or apart from them,
No more modest than immodest.
Unscrew the locks from the doors!
Unscrew the doors themselves from their jambs!
Whoever degrades another degrades me,
And whatever is done or said returns at last to me.“

Remembering Walt Whitman on his birthday.

In 1865, when he was working as a minor clerk for the government, the Secretary of the Interior fired him after reportedly finding a copy of Leaves of Grass. (Cabinet members in those days evidently had enough time on their hands to snoop through their clerks‘ desk drawers.) 👀🍿#PoetryChallenge2018 #WaltWhitman

LA_Mead Whoa! I had no idea! 7y
Dolly What memories this brings! Growing up I was fascinated by the movie ❤️Splendor In the Grass ❤️with the beautiful Natalie Wood. Can‘t remember the male lead... Steve McQueen? Paul Newman? I thought is was such a sexy movie. Gotta check it out again and see how it plays now. Thanks! UPDATE - OMG It was a young Warren Beatty! (edited) 7y

Authors who served: Hemingway was an ambulance driver in WWI, Whitman tended the wounded during the American Civil War, Tolkien was a British soldier in WWI, Salinger stormed the beaches at D-Day during WWII, Wharton became a war correspondent in Europe during WWII, and Dahl was a fighter pilot in WWII. #inmemoriam #maybookflowers

Lmstraubie Great info. Thx for sharing! 7y
readinginthedark I didn't know about Wharton; that's cool! 7y
Brie @Lmstraubie @readinginthedark Yeah, I thought I'd look up some neat facts. I didn't know about the Wharton one either before. She was in Paris during the war. 7y

I'm getting psyched for PSU's annual marathon read! So thrilled that Whitman poems will be closing out the event (an occurrence I'm sure has quite a lot to do with my poetry professor being the dean of the English department and his favorite poet being Whitman) Anyone have a favorite Whitman poem?
