Everything That's Underneath | Kristi DeMeester
post image
Pickpick

I really loved this short story collection. Kristi DeMeester is very good at setting up a creepy tone by effectively activating the reader's five senses; taste, touch, smell, sound, and sight. She was also able to describe emotions is a beautiful and disturbing way. I don't think this collection will be for everyone, but if you enjoy psychological/body horror that's a little more subtle, then you might enjoy this book.

This manga has a unique and interesting premise, but something was missing for me. It was difficult to tell what was happening at times, particularly during the battle scenes and it was also difficult for me to tell the characters apart from one another. Maybe I'll have better luck with the anime. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As you can probably tell from the title, this isn‘t a heartwarming tearjerker about a boy and his dog. This book goes inside the mind of a sociopathic bull terrier. If you don‘t like reading about animals getting hurt or killed, then skip this. However, if you can stomach that, this is a very interesting book that tells a story from a different perspective. Despite the subject matter, it‘s easy to read because it‘s very well written.

I have a lot to say about this book, but not a lot of space to say it. So I will say that I think the hype surrounding this book ruined it for me. If I had not known that there was a twist then it would have been more effective. Because I knew about the twist, I found myself trying to figure it out, which I did about halfway. Also, the twist was not that great. It was not effectively crafted.👇

alexbaysinger A good twist immediately makes you want to re-read a book to pick up any clues that you missed because everything clicked together so well. This book did not make me feel like that. Also I felt the prose was over-written, like the author was trying too hard. I will say that the last 25 pages did pack an emotional punch, which redeemed the book somewhat for me. 6y
Eggs I liked it but also I wasn't exposed to any hype beforehand. So the undeniable effect of hype... 6y
alexbaysinger @Eggs very true. I feel like a lot of books or movies that are marketed with "twist" endings that "everyone will be talking about" really do a disservice to the book or movie. What makes a twist effective is that they aren't expected. So when you go into a movie or a book knowing there is a twist it ruins the surprise because all you're doing is trying to figure out what the twist is. 6y
Eggs Agreed and I do relish the unexpected 🤓I don't know what can be done short of not looking at reviews 6y

I really enjoyed this book. Which is strange because the subject matter is not really joyful. Mostly it serves as a reminder of how difficult it is to be a woman in our society. This is not a plot driven book, it is character driven, which I think is why I enjoyed it. Even though the characters weren't the most "likeble" you could understand and empathize with them. Zumas really succeeds in creating interesting, flawed, fleshed-out human beings.

I loved this manga! It's set in early 20th century Japan. A war veteran and an Ainu girl form an unlikely alliance to find hidden Ainu gold. Amazing action scenes, plus I learned a lot about the Meiji era of Japan and about the Ainu people.

What a shame that the CW didn't end up picking up Joe Hill's take on Tales from the Darkside. He's one of my favorite writers and so versatile! He writes amazing books, comics, AND scripts. Hopefully another network will read these and consider letting Mr. Hill write another pilot for a tv show and actually put it on the air!

During their investigation the group finds something more sinister is lurking in the woods around the compound. I really enjoyed this book. While it wasn't necessarily scary to me, there was a lot of creepy and disturbing imagery and the story was very intriguing, which made me want to keep reading. (4/5)

This was so great! I love reading the episodes rather than listening to the podcast. For some reason, I just can't pay attention to audio books or podcasts, so this format is much better for me. If you have the same issue and you want to see what Welcome to Nightvale is all about, then I highly recommend this book. If you're already a fan, then this is a great way to revisit the older episodes.

Wow, this is a chunker! It's a little over 800 pages, and it contains most of H.P.L's most well known stories and a few poems. I wouldn't recommend this collection to anyone who is just starting to get into Lovecraft. I would suggest that you start with a smaller volume or of you have the Serial Reader app, read the stories available there. His style takes some getting used to👇

This series starts off kind of slow, but it starts to pick up. I really like Riri as a character and her relationship with A.I. Tony Stark. I known some people have a problem with Riri "replacing" Tony in Invincible Iron Man. Personally, I think it's awesome and I can relate to Riri a little bit more than Tony.

This book is heartbreaking. Like the beginning says it's not a story about war, it's a story about ruin. It's a story about how war can break someone so that they lose themselves completely. The main character is difficult to like because she is so broken and she makes some awful choices, but you can understand why she commits these atrocities. I really enjoyed this book even though it made me angry at some points.

A successful horror writer is blackmailed by a cult of astral projectors to write a book promoting their organization.
