These poems explore--spiral around--Edmonton's "shadow geography." The book is divided roughly into three sections: the people and places of public transit, urban wildlife, and construction work. The transit section is largely based on the #9 bus, which draws a north-south line through the city, crossing the North Saskatchewan River and traversing the downtown core. The urban wildlife section places a special emphasis on the city's unofficial mascot, muse, and genius loci the Black-billed Magpie. The third section is about labour, especially landscaping and the oil industry.

Introducing my latest project: a booktube channel! As you may be aware, I have been greatly limited in my ability to read print and look at screens over the past month, while I am healing from a concussion. But I can still talk! So I have made little videos talking about books and reading. You are invited to hear what I‘ve got to say via this link: https://youtube.com/channel/UCtvMCwkxsmnbqnTghQhg6pw

Reading Envy Podcast Episode 159: Reading Doorways with Lindy. @Lindy

Lindy and Jenny settle in to talk about themselves as readers and what they care most about in the books they read and love. Lindy brings three books up for awards in Alberta, and Jenny brings poems and non-fiction and one novel. We also discuss a few more ideas for the 2019 Reading Envy Summer Reading Challenge

Cathythoughts Oh great ! Will have a listen later when I have more time 👍🏻 5y
Lindy I‘m glad you found an online description of Nancy Pearl‘s 4 doorways. Did you notice that Pearl recommends one of your three picks? https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/columns-and-blogs/nancy-pearl/artic... 5y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy that's a pretty amazing connection... Also found the book is out of print! When I went to link to it in Amazon it was $60ish. 5y

There‘s too many of us here —
we can‘t be seen just standing around!
The foreman pointed with his cigarette,
You four — go hide in that trench!
Shepherd‘s hand on the damp trench wall,
fingers on a vein of clay,
he found a fossilized mollusc,
freshwater clamstone powdery white,
long-buried memory of pelican water
that once covered this place.

I leaned forward to ease my lower back while I was reading. Frida took this as an invitation to climb up. #kittieslovepoetry

Samplergal Adorable. 6y
Samplergal I miss cats. I haven‘t had a cat for about 10 years because we have dogs that are aholes with cats. 🤨 Give her a hug. She looks abused. 😂 6y
LeahBergen Ohhhh! 😍😍 6y
LauraBeth That‘s some adorableness right there! 6y
Lindy @Samplergal I understand missing cats. Feline energy is a lovely thing, especially with a cuddly cat like Frida. 6y
Lindy @LeahBergen @LauraBeth She‘s a sweetheart. 😊 6y
AlaMich She is clearly a Litten with fur because she is evidently very curious about your book! 😻 6y
Lindy @AlaMich There are a lot of magpies in this poetry; she is always interested in birds. 6y

I‘m still collecting Tim Hortons references in literature. (Littens, please tag me when you come across them.) Just found one in this poetry book:
“Your right hand might literally not know / what your left is doing. Does one shake / an empty paper Tim Hortons cup?”

(Photo: Timmies cup spotted while I waited for the bus earlier today.)

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I read one book that had references to Swiss Chalet and Shoppers Drug Mart that made me smile. 😃 6y
