Last of the Stanfields | Marc Levy
10 posts | 13 read | 15 to read
A mystery, a love story, and a search through a shadowy past. Two strangers unite in this novel of family secrets by international bestselling author Marc Levy, the most read contemporary French author in the world. When London journalist Eleanor-Rigby Donovan receives an anonymous letter alluding to a crime committed by her deceased mother, her life is turned upside down. It points her to a bar on the Baltimore Harbor, where she finds a stranger who has received the same mysterious letter about his own mother. Together, Eleanor-Rigby and this young man, George-Harrison Collins, embark on a quest through the shadowy past of the Stanfields, a moneyed Maryland family full of unimaginable secrets. These secrets will transport them back decades, across continents, and to a mysterious crime long buried...until now.

This was a slower read for me, but still a pick. The mystery unfolds as two young adults are pulled together by mysterious letters that have them digging deep into theirs families‘ pasts. 3.5⭐️ for my July #bookspin

It took me a while to get through this book, but I had to know how it ended. It was almost a DNF.

The multigenerational time-hopping was fun and well-done. I give it a so-so because I feel it was longer than required.

Really enjoying the feel of this one - very readable and I‘m curious to where it‘s going. If only I could curl up and finish it.

Reading for #ReadingEurope2020 - translated from French

I really enjoyed this book. A lighter, quick-ish read. Dual storylines are so popular right now and this one has a 3rd... but was done well enough to not be confusing. I enjoyed most of it, unsure how I feel about the matriarch ... without giving anything away, I guess in the end she wasn‘t as ruthless as she seemed. Michel was my favorite character, absolutely loved his ‘logic‘.

I found Robert and Hanna's story to be the most compelling, dating back to World War II. Eleanor-Rigby and George-Harrison felt a little flat and predictable. I thought the mysteries were given away in the plot too easily, but the characters kept me interested and the story itself made up for it.

What a great story!!! Multiple narrators, multiple timelines, one complicated and layered mystery that slowly comes together. Each chapter revealing a little more until you are finally given all the answers. I highly recommend this one.

Maybe it's better in its original French (the French cover is more exciting at least)? I finished this through the decades mystery but quite slowly.

The characters and plot never quite felt real or as fun as they seemed like they should be to me. It was lacking a certain je ne sais quoi.

Tamra 😑 One of THOSE weeks. 6y
Karisa @Tamra Yup! Dragged along but not enough to bail completely. 🤗 6y
