The Last True Love Story
The Last True Love Story | Brendan Kiely

From the critically acclaimed author of The Gospel of Winter and the coauthor of All American Boys comes a cool, contemplative spin on hot summer nights and the classic teen love story as two teens embark on a cross-country journey of the heart and soul. The point of living is learning how to love. Thats what Gpa says. To Hendrix and Corrina, both seventeen but otherwise alike only in their loneliness, that sounds like another line from a pop song that tries to promise kids that life doesnt actually suck. Okay, so: love. Sure. The thing about Corrinaher adoptive parents are suffocating, trying to mold her into someone acceptable, predictable, like them. Shes a musician, itching for any chance to escape, become the person she really wants to be. Whoever that is. And Hendrix, hes cool. Kind of a poet. But also kind of lost. His dad is dead and his mom is married to her job. Gpa is his only real family, but hes fading fast from Alzheimers. Looking for any way to help the man who raised him, Hendrix has made Gpa an impossible promisethat hell get him back east to the hill where he first kissed his wife, before his illness wipes away all memory of her. One hot July night, Hendrix and Corrina decide to risk everything. They steal a car, spring Gpa from his assisted living facility, stuff Old Humper the dog into the back seat, and take off on a cross-country odyssey from LA to NY. With their parents, Gpas doctors, and the police all hot on their heels, Hendrix and Corrina set off to discover for themselves if what Gpa says is truethat the only stories that last are love stories.

Teddy is just trying to fulfill his grandfather's wish of going home before losing the memory of his wife. This was a lovely story full of road trip adventures, a little bit of romance, and a whole lot of heart. It touches on the importance of stories and music as a soundtrack to life.
My grandfather has dementia and it is so hard to see him lose a little more of himself each day. This reminded me to get as much out of the time that we still have.

peanutnine Thanks again @wideeyedreader for gifting me this one!! 3y

#2019Book24
I love road trip novels. And I have a soft spot for books about grandparent/grandchild relationships. My main criticism of this book, though, is that every secondary character was significantly more interesting than the main character. Fortunately, we get enough of the other characters to keep the story moving.

Despite its simplicity, I think this cover qualifies as #SomethingPretty. But ignore my thumb, as it is definitely not pretty. #RiotGrams

Just got this today. It's about a guy (Hendrix) and a gal (Corinna) who take Hendrix's gpa, who is suffering from Alzheimers, out of assisted living to go on one last epic road trip. Of course, their parents & the authorities are on their heels. This sounds so good!

This story is as beautiful as the cover. A grandfather, his grandson and a friend go on a journey across the US where they find themselves.

"It can't be the end, not for gpa, not for Corrina, and not for me, because it is out here on the road in the middle of nowhere that I have finally come to understand what my grandfather means when he says the point of living is learning how to love."
