An unexpected inheritance, a promise broken, and four lives changed forever: the newest page-turner from USA Today bestselling author Jamie Brenner. Summer has started in idyllic Sag Harbor, and for Emma Mapson that means greeting guests at the front desk of The American Hotel. But when one of the town's most famous residents, artist Henry Wyatt, dies suddenly, Emma learns he has mysteriously left his waterfront home - a self-designed masterpiece filled with his work - to her teenage daughter, Penny. Back in Manhattan, legendary art patron Bea Winstead's grief at her lifelong friend and former business partner Henry's passing turns to outrage at the news of his shocking bequest. How did these unknown locals get their hands on the estate? Bea, with her devoted assistant Kyle in tow, descends on Sag Harbor determined to reclaim the house and preserve Henry's legacy. While Emma fights to defend her daughter's inheritance, Bea discovers that Henry left a treasure trove of sketches scattered around town. With Penny's reluctant help, Bea pieces them together to find a story hidden in plain sight: an illustration of their shared history with an unexpected twist that will change all of their lives. Drawn together in their battle for the house, Emma and Bea are forced to confront the past while facing a future that challenges everything they believe about love, fate, and family.

Drawing Home is like a cold glass of sweet tea on a hot summer day, refreshing and delightful all at the same time. A great beach read, one that will keep you turning the pages well after the sun goes down.

4.5 ☆ My first book by this author, Drawing Home HAS DRAWN ME IN!!
I very much enjoyed the mystery surrounding famous artist Henry Wyatt‘s will, then there‘s my love of the arts, architecture + building restoration. Add to that it has Elin Hilderbrands endorsement.. of course I knew I had to read it! Brenner brought the town of Sag Harbor + it‘s characters to life all likable with the exception of two. A fun story I read in one sitting.

Although the world was a place of chaos & disorder, artists could impose order within the confines of their work. When he was painting or creating a sculpture, his mind was completely blank. "It‘s important to be able to find that kind of quiet in your life. When you‘re young, your life, your perspective, has only 1 direction-forward, toward the future. But when you‘re old, you also have the past. The past informs the present & shapes the future.”

This is my second experience with Brenner‘s beach reads and this one set in Sag Harbor is light-hearted and fast-paced. Great for a weekend trip, I enjoyed this despite the predictable plot. It‘s almost sweetly satisfying and great for a quick escape into imagining what you would do with a windfall like Penny‘s!

Author Jamie Brenner says this photo provided inspiration for the fictional Windsong, the home designed by recently deceased minimalist artist Henry Wyatt that figures prominently in her new novel, Drawing Home, available May 7th. Henry mentored & inspired 14-year-old Penny, who struggles with OCD, & bequeathed the home to Penny. Brenner says the home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, "lived in my mind for 9 months" as she wrote.

I liked this a lot more in the second half. The motivations of the characters in the first half were pretty one-dimensional. #howjessreadsin2019

One of Brenner's favourite themes is of the families we choose, and although this is a mother-daughter story, it is also about those we pick to be our family. I found this work a bit vanilla and by that I mean that everybody likes vanilla, but it is just...fine. Drawing Home was a nice light read but I knew where it was headed pretty quickly after starting it.
