A Room Made of Leaves | Kate Grenville

Pickpick

Elizabeth, Mrs John Macarthur, travels from her home on the Devon/Cornwall border to Sydney, Australia, in 1790, one of the first soldiers‘ wives to do so. This is the story of a strong, canny woman finding a way to make her own space, in a world that offers her limited choices and in a marriage not of love, but of grudging appreciation.

rockpools A fictionalised memoir, based on the letters of the real Elizabeth Macarthur, I enjoyed this a lot and could happily have spent more time discovering her new world.

Thanks to #Netgalley for the ARC - this book came out in the UK last week.
Another tick on my #bookspinbingo (but still no bingo) and one for #NetGalleyReadathon Also #BBRC #GrowUp #Inspiredbyatruestoryorrealperson

Edith Eger is a remarkable human being. Now in her 90s, she survived Auschwitz, and in later life went on to train as a psychologist. Here she shares her wisdom in a self-help book, with stories of how her, her family and her clients have broken through ‘mental prisons‘ and learnt to better appreciate the gift of life. She ends each chapter with a couple of exercises to help change your thinking.

rockpools I read her autobiography, The Choice earlier in the year and really admire her - I think she talks a lot of sense, and I‘m planning to go back and read this more slowly at a later date. I‘m not sure, though, that I‘d have been quite as receptive to what she has to say if I didn‘t already‘know‘ her through her earlier book. Maybe read that first? This was an ARC provided by #RandomHouse via #NetGalley for review (edited) 4y

I finished my first audiobook from NetGalley!

While this book wasn‘t exactly the creepfest I was expecting, it is a solid thriller with a coupled twists that totally got me. I love being surprised by a book.

My review is on my blog: http://sprainedbrain.blog/2020/08/13/audiobook-review-the-shadows-by-alex-north/

⭐️⭐️⭐️

7th book finished for my #NetGalleyReadathon 😃

Mehso-so

More Spice Girls than Britney Spears, this book traces the journey of 4 young women who climb to stardom overnight. My problem with the novel was its lack of originality. Unfortunately for me, this book read very juvenile, even though the heavy subject matter of fat shaming, addiction, domestic abuse & suicide are covered. It‘s not too often that a book makes me feel old (or bored) but this one did. #ARC #NetGalleyReadathon #BookSpinBingo

Cinfhen Good call to skip @MicheleinPhilly @Reviewsbylola if you didn‘t like Daisy Jones you certainly won‘t care for Sassy Cassy 😝 4y
TrishB I hated Daisy Jones! Be skipping too 😁 4y
Cinfhen It‘s definitely a #BorrowNotBuy @TrishB but if you‘re feeling nostalgic for the early aughts this might hit a high note 😜 4y

VeganCleopatra @TrishB 🤗 I always feel like the only one that disliked that book. 4y
Cinfhen I wasn‘t crazy over Daisy either @VeganCleopatra there‘s a few of us 😉 4y
MicheleinPhilly Even the synopsis bored me. It sounded like Daisy for the YA set. Thanks for taking one for the team! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Sometimes YA is too YA 😆 4y
Cinfhen Yessssssss @TheAromaofBooks EXACTLY 🤪 I don‘t think this one‘s for you @MicheleinPhilly 4y
eanderson On no... so I picked this for BOTM primarily because it is a debut and I want to complete the challenge. I was worried it was going to be bad... 4y
Cinfhen It‘s not BAD , it‘s just not anything special @eanderson I had higher hopes😫 4y
Reviewsbylola Thank you for making me 100% sure I was right to skip this. 😆 4y
TrishB @VeganCleopatra only book I‘ve panned on here -finished as was using for a challenge! 4y

The plan is to finish Out of Time by tomorrow, read all of The Night Swim this week (please, please let it be as good as The Escape Room!), and start Opium and Absinthe. All of these are for my #NetGalleyReviewathon, and sadly, I‘m late reading all of these. I‘ve missed pub dates for two and I‘ll miss the pub date for the other. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sace The Night Swim was my BOTM pick this month. I can't wait to read it. 4y
Cinfhen I have some #ARCs to get too also!!! I‘m gonna try to join @sprainedbrain #NetGalleyReadathon 4y

The #NetGalleyReadathon has now finished. Only medium success - finished three books over the week, and read 27% of the Val McDermid book, in that time written two reviews.

Think we need to do more of these!

Crazeedi I didn't participate, but I think it's a great idea to do another one, I have many I could read! 4y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Yes I‘ve got 5 more to read and 8 requests in. 4y
Clwojick @Andrew65 😂😂😂 oh boy, I‘m pretty sure I have like 1500 left to read/review between NetGalley and free amazon downloads. I could exclusively read ebooks for the next 2-3 years and I probably wouldn‘t finish them all. 4y
Clwojick Maybe I‘ll schedule one a month for the next little bit. I was thrilled to lower my numbers, even by just a small handful. Some months go by without me doing any reviews, and I‘d like to get away from that. 4y
Andrew65 @Clwojick Sounds a good idea. Don‘t get me started on how many ebooks I have. 😳 Not even looking. 🤣 (edited) 4y

I really enjoyed this one, told from different perspectives. Someone‘s lying but who is it? A bit of everything thrown in here, different perspectives, relationships, jealousy, envy, family and friend issues, different timelines, Murder. This all made a very dark and psychological story that keeps you wanting to read on as you try to work out what exactly is going on and who is the murderer and why. Recommended. #NetGalley #NetGalleyReadathon

Andrew65 Thanks to NetGalley for a review copy of this audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review. 4y
abookishbutterfly Glad you ended up enjoying it all the way through! 4y
Clwojick I liked it too! At one point i correctly guessed the ending, but with so much going on my theories changed at the end of every chapter 😂 4y
Andrew65 @Clwojick me too! Very changeable throughout the book. 4y
