Often acclaimed as Le Carré's best this is the heavily autobiographical tale of Magnus Pym, the perfect spy of the title, and his relationship with his conman father. Excellent, even if I found some of the motivation behind Pym's betrayals a little opaque.

My first time reading LeCarre and it was challenging for sure. A Perfect Spy is unconventional in its use of first person and third person POV, often within the span of the same sentence. It jumps from multiple character POVs through multiple timelines, creating a collage-like story that can often be a bit confusing. Once the reader gets their bearings and simply accepts what LeCarre is doing it becomes a read which rewards the effort.

It took me a while to get into the rhythm of this one. The POV changes constantly, not just between characters but also from 3rd person omniscient to 1st person to 3rd person limited (with characters recalling past events about themselves in the 3rd person). This is the first le Carre novel I've read. I'm not sure if this is indicative of his other work, but once I got used to the style I loved it and will definitely be reading more of his stuff.

? Just a tiny little thing but a pet peeve of mine: mispronouncing a easily looked-up name. Joe Louis was a famous American boxer. No matter who *you* are or where you are from, *his* last name is pronounced /‘lü-is/ (NOT /‘lü-ē/) There are tons of fight videos and reference books like dictionaries out there. If the audiobook narrator didn‘t use them the proofed/QC department should have.

🎧 Started reading this last year when I was on vacation in France but got very distracted by, well France! Picking it up again and starting over, this time in audio (narrated by Michael Jayston.) The story is about the life of a spy named, “Pym.” Complicated in structure w/dIfferent POVs that sometimes interlace, the audio narrator is doing a yeoman‘s job.

BethFishReads Haha. I wonder how much reading & listening I‘ll do in Europe 6y
Dogearedcopy @BethFishReads Except on the plane, I get almost no reading done on fly-to destinations but I do quite a bit of book buying! 6y
BethFishReads Yeah. My experience too 6y

#2017wrapup #DNF

This year I got better at putting down books that I just didn‘t care to finish.
But I still wonder... am I missing out?🤔

I think I‘m going to give another chance to A Perfect Spy. Is there another one here I should try again?

Gezemice Sometimes it is the book, other times I am just not in the mood. I can usually tell which. 7y
DGRachel I love le Carre, but I definitely have to be in the right head space for him. His novels are often very slow burns. 7y
Sweettartlaura @Gezemice I‘m getting better at making that distinction 7y

Sweettartlaura @DGRachel I can see that. There were moments that this was sublime. Then... I would just lose hold of that. I‘m hoping I can start fresh with it next year & enjoy it properly. 7y
Kristy_K My goal for next year is to be more willing to dnf. I‘m always afraid I‘ll be, as you said, missing out, especially if a lot of people liked the book, but in the end I normally wish I hadn‘t wasted my time. 7y
Sweettartlaura @Kristy_K It‘s so hard ... sometimes the best books make you work for that payoff. 7y
Eggs @Sweettartlaura @Kristy_K I am always conflicted on DNF. I need to allow myself to bail more often. But then many times if I keep reading, I'm eventually glad I did. I think that each book has something to offer, something to take from it 7y
Sweettartlaura @Eggs It is freeing to let go of a book. There‘s no good formula for it, though. I always give something 10% before I bail. The hard choice is when I can make it to 50% or more, but I don‘t want to finish - at that point I feel like I ought to. 7y
Kristy_K @Eggs @Sweettartlaura I always try to read at least 25% before I make a decision, but I‘m the same way. If I‘ve read to the halfway mark I feel I should just finish the book. 7y

John le Carre's classic spy novel is a stunning psychological unpicking of the motivations and psychology of a spy, which partly draws on le Carre's own background.
