The Brave Learner
The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life | Julie Bogart
18 posts | 8 read | 8 to read
A joyful and accessible approach to homeschooling that harnesses children's natural curiosity and makes learning a part of everyday life, whether they're in elementary or high school Parents who are deeply invested in their children's education can be hard on themselves and their kids. When exhausted parents are living the day-to-day grind, it can seem impossible to muster enough energy to make learning fun or interesting. How do parents nurture a love of learning amid childhood chaos, parental self-doubt, the flu, and state academic standards? In this book, Julie Bogart distills decades of experience--homeschooling her five now grown children, developing curricula, and training homeschooling families around the world--to show parents how to make education an exciting, even enchanting, experience for their kids, whether they're in elementary or high school. Enchantment is about ease, not striving. Bogart shows parents how to make room for surprise, mystery, risk, and adventure in their family's routine, so they can create an environment that naturally moves learning forward. If a child wants to pick up a new hobby or explore a subject area that the parent knows little about, it's easy to simply say "no" to end the discussion and the parental discomfort, while dousing their child's curious spark. Bogart gently invites parents to model brave learning for their kids so they, too, can approach life with curiosity, joy, and the courage to take learning risks.

A pick- for this one. Some great ideas about bringing more joy, inspiration, and love to homeschooling, although I disagree with the fundamental idea that to have a vibrant educational environment at home that you have to abandon the desire for cleanliness. Lots to think about here.

First completion for #24B4Monday and I‘m at 1:43 on my time so far!

Chrissyreadit I have to admit I had to let go of a lot of housework to homeschool and work.... now my teens are doing dual enrollment and I‘m back in school so not much has improved. 5y
ravenlee @Chrissyreadit sure, standards change, just like they do having kids in the first place. And I only have one, so it‘s different than having several. But this message becomes “if your house is clean you‘re not allowing creativity and inspiration - you have to make a mess all the time to homeschool well!” We just don‘t leave messes out, cleaning up is part of the process. Doesn‘t make me a worse teacher/mom. 5y
Chrissyreadit Very true. 5y
Andrew65 A good start. 😊👍👏 5y

And here we go again...I‘m cruising along, feeling really good about this book I just started, and then there‘s this. Latin is not the language of musical notation, Italian is. Actually, several languages are found in music, which is one of the great educational opportunities in studying music. Now I‘m going to be more tentative in my reading of this book...

LiteraryinPA How could they get that wrong?! 5y

Surprise sparks interest. Mystery sustains it. Think of mystery as the kindling you add to the fire. Surprise strikes the match. Mystery (the unknowable heart of all enterprises) keeps the fire going.

Just what I needed to read during this time of my homeschooling journey. Definitely a help for me dealing with the pressure of people who have never homeschooled but feel the need to tell me I'm doing it wrong. A great read even if you don't want to homeschool.
