This is a dark and violent mosaic novel following various stories in the American southwest. A theme running through at least most of the stories is of characters seeking vengeance of the bloodiest possible sort. This book isn‘t for everyone, but I recommend it for folks who can handle extremely dark and heavy themes and storylines.

Finished the tagged novel while the pie cooled. I won't say much since this is my #lmpbc book this month, but I didn't really get into this one. Some of the storylines are more interesting than others, and they don't come together as well as they might. The pie was good, though.

Gissy Maybe the book was not as good as expected but that pie looks delicious😋 2y

Worked on the tagged #lmpbc book and enjoyed this view of construction while my kiddo experienced a teenage rite of passage: wisdom tooth extraction. She's home and doing well so far, but with keeping up with timers for gauze, ice packs, and meds and translating her gauze-speech requests, I'm getting less reading done.

Coyote Songs by Gabino Iglesias is a gut-wrenching and heavy mosaic novel that focuses on the lives of various characters as they all go through tragic events.

While there are many things that may be triggering in this content, that was the point. This is a very dark and difficult read. This will likely make you very uncomfortable, but it‘s important to sit in that discomfort to understand why novels like this are so important.

I'm not much of a horror reader, and this book is quite graphic in places, so it was a difficult read. But I understand why the author chose to tell this particular story in this way. And Iglesias has a real talent for drawing a character in just a few pages so that you can feel real empathy even as that character goes on to do horrible things. I recommend this if you want to read a timely, thoughtful horror novel about the US-Mexico border.

This book would be pretty challenging for a reader without some level of Spanish knowledge and/or access to google translate.

I personally love it, but this book is from a small press and I have a feeling the big guys would have deemed it not "accessible" enough.

Just started reading this book and found this interview with the author: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/every-ounce-of-my-soul-an-interview-with-gab...

“Writers with accents...who write about specific places know there is something unique in the rhythm of the people from there. Those who only want to show the accent actually spell words differently to make sure readers get it. That, to me, is a failure.“

effani The whole interview is worth reading, but that quote stood out to me as something I've felt strongly when reading certain books but never been able to really put words to. 4y

Happy #socksunday! Got these new gems this weekend - the slipper socks and @gabino_iglesias‘s Stoker nominated Coyote Songs, which I sadly didn‘t snag when he was in town but I have now!

What a gorgeous blood-soaked noir! Truly moving plights of these six characters as they struggle against horrors on both sides of the border. A must read!

Iglesias took a risk with this book but he absolutely nailed it. The story is told from 6 different POVs, but each character felt distinct and their stories came together so well. It's about borders and the horror that they engender. You might need to dl Google Translate, but it added so much to the book.
