Sinuous and striking, heartbreaking and strange, Costalegre is heavily inspired by the real-life relationship between the heiress Peggy Guggenheim and her daughter, Pegeen. Acclaimed author Courtney Maum triumphs with this wildly imaginative and curiously touching story of a privileged teenager who has everything a girl could wish for except for a mother who loves her back.

Mehso-so

Costalegre is an epistolary novel of diary entries from 15 year old Laura. She is in Mexico with her mother, who has created an artist‘s colony and is more concerned about her paintings arriving then the imminent eruption of WWII. This is based on Peggy Guggenheim and her relationship with her daughter and certainly deals with privilege and neglect. But overall I wasn‘t sure what the point was and it doesn‘t really have an ending, it just stops.

Pickpick

So, I loved this. A dazzling, heartbreaking novel, beautiful and not a little strange, but full of life and heart and a fierce energy. We all need more books like this one.

“I wish I were a mermaid. I wish that I could swim. I wish that I could scream until my pores were tentacles and I pulled each and every person down with me until life was soft again. And then I would come up on the shore and I‘d be human. And I‘d know where to go.”

(This book gutted me in ways I wasn‘t expecting).

My new library hold came in- how great is this cover. It is WWII and Lara is in Costalegre Mexico living with her mother and 20th century surrealist artists as they wait out the war together. A gaggle of surrealists together trying to make dinner??? Yes please. 227 pages- recommended by NYT recently.

Hey, would you like to read a novel written from the point of view of Peggy Guggenheim‘s teenage daughter, set in the Mexican jungle during World War II and populated by lightly fictionalized version is of the artists who escaped the war with her? It‘s so crazy good! Watch for it in July from @Tin_House! Also, I want to wallpaper a room with this cover.
