Albina and the Dog-Men
Albina and the Dog-Men | Alejandro Jodorowsky
12 posts | 8 read | 46 to read
A darkly funny, surreal novel set in Chile and Peru, Albina and the Dog Men is Alejandro Jodorowskys sprawling modern myth in which sexual desire appears as a dangerous and generative force that mutates and transforms, unraveling identities and rending the social fabric of a small town. Written with the cinematic flair he brought to his cult 1970s films El Topo and Holy Mountain, Jodorowsky turns the classic stranger-comes-to-town narrative on its head. When two women, an amnesiac albino giantess and a woman called The Crab, arrive in this South American desert town, their otherworldly allure and unfettered sensuality turn men into wild animals. A modern day Kafka story on hallucinogens, with strong doses of mysticism and horror, Albina and the Dog Men exudes dark magical realism that throws into question the nature of what it is to be human. Reviews Jodorowsky uses his fertile imagination to present a mixed bag of historical and imaginary characters, such as the Inca King, Atahualpa, and a cast of half-humans and half-beasts that possess magical powers...Strongly recommended. Publishers Weekly Alejandro Jodorowsky has published Albina and the Dog Men... [which has] the aesthetic he made a show of in Where the Bird Sings Best: extreme magical realism to the limits of sexuality and spirituality... Jodorowsky proposes a search for the philosophy of sex through a literature that aims more for healing than for aesthetics. Proscritos Alejandro Jodorowsky is a Chilean-French filmmaker, playwright, actor, author, musician, and spiritual guru, best known for his avant-garde films Fando and Lis (1968), El Topo (1970), The Holy Mountain (1973), and Santa Sangre (1989). A circus clown and a puppeteer in his youth, Jodorowsky left for Paris to study mime with Marcel Marceau. He befriended the surrealists Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal, and in 1962 created the "Panic Movement" in homage to the mythical god Pan. He became a specialist in the art of the Tarot and prolific author of novels, poetry, works on the Tarot and psychomagic healing, and over thirty successful comic books with such highly regarded artists as Moebius and Bess.

Bailedbailed

I am bailing on this one. Not something I do often, but I‘m just really not feeling it. I usually love bizarre stories, but I can‘t get into this one.

BarbaraBB I hadn‘t heard of this one but am in no hurry to find out now! 4y
sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB Idk maybe it‘s just me. I had seen a good review of it somewhere I think and that‘s how I ended up with a copy. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

I feel like I won the lottery in having @JulAnna as my sender in the postal book club. She sent these lovely bookish flowers for Valentine's day and the end of the cycle. I looked up the book they're made from (book posted under) and it looks like a book right up my alley. #gameoftomes

JulAnna I am glad the book arrived safely home! My daughter @JessReads made the flowers, so happy that you like them! 😊 💕 7y

A strange, delightful, fucked-up fever dream of a mythology. Not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it.

Book 5 down for #24in48! I seriously do not even know what I just read. It was great though & very well-written. It's sort of like if Chaucer, Hans Christian Anderson, the Brothers Grimm, and Aesop all had a fever dream orgy together in the Himalayas of Chile. So weird, but in the best way possible. Lots of mythological supernatural layers to this. Also lots of sexy times. I'll actually review it sometime when I have more time to think on it. 🏜

Mayread I really want his tarot & writing on it. Jodorosky is the man. 8y
NovelGirl82 Sounds interesting!! 8y

Starting #24in48 Readathon. Just look at the art in this book! Just as weird as I described in my last post but it's so good. I'm starting with this book because it's short & engaging. It'll kick me off with some good momentum. Love anything supernatural. I'll be updating here, but I'll also periodically check into Twitter, Instagram, & my new blog. (Links in profile.) Feel free to follow! Where else will you be posting?🖊

CynCruz23 Love everything about this - didn't think I needed an albino giantess and magical cactuses in my life but I really do! Can't wait to see what your review is 👍 Happy #24in48 reading! 8y
BookishFeminist @CynCruz23 I didn't realize I needed it either but it's excellent so far! 🌵 Happy #24in48 reading to you too! 8y

Friday relaxing at Starbucks. Sometimes all you need is an introvert corner in a coffee shop, some reading, and a sweet treat. Looking forward to reading this book! The cover says it's a Chilean supernatural love and horror story where an albino giantess has the allure to turn men into beasts. She goes on a quest to find a magical cactus that will cure her and the men she has affected before the town consumes itself. 🌵 #WNDB

Notafraidofwords Wow that's one interesting plot. 8y

quirkyreader It's written by a famous cult film director. Too bad his version of Dune never made it to the screen. 8y

Mehso-so

Although parts of it can feel rushed (maybe better adapted for a film sequence) or out of place, there's still some substance beneath the simplicity. Lots of the religious symbolism inherent in most of his work and a copious amount of copulation.
