What Is Given from the Heart
What Is Given from the Heart | Patricia C. McKissack
6 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
This final, magnificent picture book from three-time Coretta Scott King Award winner and Newbery Honor author Patricia McKissack is a poignant and uplifting celebration of the joy of giving. "Misery loves company," Mama says to James Otis. It's been a rough couple of months for them, but Mama says as long as they have their health and strength, they're blessed. One Sunday before Valentine's Day, Reverend Dennis makes an announcement during the service-- the Temples have lost everything in a fire, and the church is collecting anything that might be useful to them. James thinks hard about what he can add to the Temple's "love box," but what does he have worth giving? With her extraordinary gift for storytelling, McKissack--with stunning illustrations by Harrison--delivers a touching, powerful tale of compassion and reminds us all that what is given from the heart, reaches the heart.

This RF, RA Coretta Scott King Award Winning book teaches a wonderful lesson to young readers. This story emphasizes the importance of generosity, kindness, and appreciation. A poor family who continuously experiences loss helps out another family in need even though they do not have much to give. This story highlights the power of kindness. #UCFLAE3414SP21

This book would work well as a RA, using the recommended methods from Readwritethink.org. The UDL Principle 3.1 and EL Strategy 4 will help students activate their background knowledge and make connections with the text.

#ShowSomeLove Day 22: This one has #HeartOnCover. This story is a powerful reminder of how even the littlest of things can make a world of difference, especially when What is Given (is) from the heart. In truth, those who have very little to give, are the most open-hearted – it is like they carry the world on their shoulders, and along with it everyone else‘s burdens, too. My review of this lovely story: https://wp.me/pDlzr-l83

Nute I agree with what you said in this post. Oftentimes, those with little material possessions/wealth open not only their hearts but also their homes, their closets and their wallets/money jars/ bank accounts.💕 Thanks for sharing the artwork from the book. It is very nice. 4y
GatheringBooks @Nute this becomes even more apparent, I believe, given the current circumstances brought about by the pandemic. This book surfaced that aspect quite beautifully without being heavy-handed or didactic, simply heartfelt and beautiful. 💕💕🧚🏼‍♀️🧚🏼‍♀️🧚🏼‍♀️ 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Nute I totally agree! 4y

This book would be good for RA. It is about a boy whose friend lost all her things in a fire. He wants to give her a gift. This book can teach kids that authenticity and gestures that come from the heart are priceless. Resource: https://images.randomhouse.com/promo_image/9780375836152_5483.pdf
I would use UDL guideline 2.4 and use lots of gestures and teach vocabulary words so this book would be under stable for all students.

annalor I would use ESOL strategy 15 as the theme of being sincere and of material things not being the only meaningful gifts are important to understand the story. 5y
Brennap Oh wow this story already some so heart warming! I would love to read it and add it to my library. 5y
ShardaeP This sounds like a sweet book that will teach great character skills. 5y
Jennymmm Helping others and having kindness is important, this book seems to teach this. I will definitely add this book to my reading list. 5y

This was a beautiful story about poverty, empathy and generosity. James Otis and his mother are barely getting by after the death of his father. When a family at their church loses everything in a fire, James Otis and his mother look for thoughtful and heartfelt ways to help.

While this would be a good read for grades 2-5, the opening page would be anxiety inducing for mine, “Daddy went to sleep and never woke up.”

kspenmoll Lovely book cover & looks like a wonderful story. 6y
Reviewsbylola Yeah, I‘m wondering if that would be scary for my kids as well. 💔 6y
BookInMyHands @Reviewsbylola Also, I know a family that happened to so I think it makes me extra sensitive, remembering how horrible that was. 6y

This one has a little bit of a slow start but it has an overall honest and realistic quality to the story. It deals with some hard subjects like death and poverty but also good subjects like love and empathy and a giving heart.
