Greetings from Bury Park
Greetings from Bury Park | Sarfraz Manzoor
7 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
Sarfraz Manzoor was two years old when, in 1974, he emigrated from Pakistan to Britain with his mother, brother, and sister. Sarfraz spent his teenage years in a constant battle, trying to reconcile being both British and Muslim, trying to fit in at school and at home. But it was when his best friend introduced him to the music of Bruce Springsteen that his life changed completely. From the age of sixteen on, after the moment he heard the harmonica and opening lines to The River, Springsteen became his personal muse, a lens through which he was able to view the rest of his life. Both a tribute to Springsteen and a story of personal discovery, Greetings from Bury Park is a warm, irreverent, and exceptionally perceptive memoir about how music transcends religion and race. From the Trade Paperback edition.

It‘s the Jersey in me. I can‘t help raising a fist and yelling, “Bruuuuuuuce!” at this.

When I rang Amolak he went ballistic. 'You complete bastard! I don't fucking believe this! he yelled. What is fucking going on that you keep meeting him and I keep missing out? Right. I'm coming down to the High Court tomorrow.'

Manzoor meets Springsteen covering a trial. His friend, also a superfan, is not impressed!

Work has a "Big Read" (all campus book project) - here's the shortlist!

arubabookwoman The only one I‘ve read is Hullaballoo in the Guava Orchard, and it‘s one of the few Booker‘s I disliked. That was years ago, though, and my tastes may be different now. Is she related to Anita Desai? I‘ve liked everything I‘ve read by Anita Desai. The others look interesting-off to check. 4y
Vansa Kiran Desai is Anita Desai's daughter. Also she didn't get the Booker for this book, but Inheritance of Loss 4y
charl08 @arubabookwoman @Vansa I really must pick this up again, have been distracted by other books. 4y

I‘m posting one book per day from my ever-increasing TBR. No description. No explanation. Just books to read. Join the fun if you want.

Day 71.

Vansa Lovely, charming book. HUGELY recommend Blinded by the light, the movie based on the book as well. It really emphasized the universality of Springsteen's music. 4y
dariazeoli @Vansa As a Jersey girl, I loved that there was a movie with this plot, and was thrilled that it was an adaptation of this book! Hope to get to it this year! 4y

Read this in 2 days in an effort to find books that will diversify our 11th grade Brit Lit curriculum // A little choppy but overall a good read that will give us a starting point to discuss race, class, and gender discrimination when school resumes // Slightly concerned about parents‘ potential reaction to the profanity though 😬 #teachersoflitsy #weneeddiversebooks
