A young girl with an eating disorder must find the strength to recover in this moving middle-grade novel from Jen Petro-Roy Before she had an eating disorder, twelve-year-old Riley was many things: an aspiring artist, a runner, a sister, and a friend. But now, from inside the inpatient treatment center where she's receiving treatment for anorexia, it's easy to forget all of that. Especially since under the influence of her eating disorder, Riley alienated her friends, abandoned her art, turned running into something harmful, and destroyed her family's trust. If Riley wants her life back, she has to recover. Part of her wants to get better. As she goes to therapy, makes friends in the hospital, and starts to draw again, things begin to look up. But when her roommate starts to break the rules, triggering Riley's old behaviors and blackmailing her into silence, Riley realizes that recovery will be even harder than she thought. She starts to think that even if she does "recover," there's no way she'll stay recovered once she leaves the hospital and is faced with her dieting mom, the school bully, and her gymnastics-star sister. Written by an eating disorder survivor and activist, Good Enough is a realistic depiction of inpatient eating disorder treatment, and a moving story about a girl who has to fight herself to survive.

Story from the POV of a 12yo anorexia patient, starting with her first day in a treatment centre. I picked it up based on a recommendation because I know someone with anorexia and I wanted to see their POV. From that perspective it‘s a bit sad, finding out how they think, believing they‘re worthless and no-one likes them.

humouress Each chapter is a day; at day 18 she‘s still in the centre. It‘s letting me see how kids (their relationships with family, friends and school) with anorexia might think but it almost makes me cry in places. Not sure if it would be good for someone with anorexia to read this or not though. 3y

This book is definitely one of my favourites. It is about eating disorders, so I wouldn‘t recommend if you are sensitive to the topic. I have never struggled with an eating disorder myself so I have no idea what it‘s like, but the character development of the main character was so amazing, and I really sympathized with her. It‘s such a great read for someone who wants learn more about the struggle with an eating disorder. Really recommend it

Forgot to post a review last night. 🤦🏽‍♀️
A different kind of story for me. It follows Riley, a 12 yo who is hospitalized after her parents aren‘t able to help her with her anorexia. She is sent to a facility specialized in eating disorders. It is told through diary entries, which makes you understand Riley‘s thoughts, reasonings, and internal battles. It‘s an eye opener and glimpse into the mind of someone dealing with anorexia.

I felt so bad for Brenna, I wanted to hold her and make it all ok for her. ***The author of this story also dealt with anorexia first had. Wonderful! I learned a lot reading this book. 12-yr-old Riley has anorexia and is in an in-patient treatment center. Her image issues stem from a classmate‘s comment, but also from her mom‘s dieting habits.

Told in journal entries, readers see what treatment looks like: group sessions, art therapy, one-on-one counseling, weigh-ins, nutrition planning. And new friendships.

The author is an eating disorder survivor.

12-year-old Riley is in an inpatient treatment center for kids with eating disorders. Breaks my heart that these even need to exist. As mom of a girl, I have always been careful of word choice when it comes to weight loss and body image. Written by an eating disorder survivor.

Maybe I‘ll read this one with my daughter.
