I had breakfast with my daily short story. This is an interesting collection so far, but I‘m pretty sure the first couple of stories are the sort that convince people they don‘t like short fiction. Expect snippets of experience more than narrative arcs, with some more cause-and-effect stuff later on.

Slowly making my way through my nightstand pile of books. I bailed on Vaseline Buddha. It had to go to the bottom (lost interest, but will revisit). Most excited for Flowers of Mold! I usually read more than one book at a time, UNLESS it is THAT GOOD. 🥴

Q: Do you prefer to finish one book before starting another or do you read many at a time without completing (if so, why)? 😊

Nute I usually read one book at a time. It‘s just always been that way. Here lately to accommodate more books in a shorter period of time, I have been reading two books (one fiction and one non-fiction). I like that arrangement. 5y
Soytoosaucy @Nute Nice!! Good combo. I should try to read more non-fiction. 5y
Yuki_Onna I like that approach! For me, just one book at a time, sadly. If I try more, it takes me ages to finish them... 5y

Soytoosaucy @Yuki_Onna oh yes, I understand! It does take me a little while to get through some and then sometimes I‘ll forget what happened, 🤦🏻‍♀️😅 I wish I was more disciplined to just finish one at a time, ergh!🤣 5y
Yuki_Onna @Soytoosaucy Exactly! I often completely forget what happened in the other books. 😅 I thought I was the only one like that... (edited) 5y
Yuki_Onna @Soytoosaucy How are you, dear? I miss you terribly. Don't wan't to impose on you, but I'd be happy to hear from you when you feel up to it... (I'm in a pretty terrible mental health situation myself, so maybe I can offer at least some non-judgemental listening). Love and cosy holidays to you! ❤ 4y

I have a handful of books I‘m still convinced I‘ll get back to and I finally made good in this one after a 6-month break. Although I never really figured out how to enjoy these stories, I can appreciate some of what they were doing. She‘s looking at dirty side of modern South Korea, literary the trash and gunk on the streets. And contrasting that with the impossible promises in advertising...and some falsely humble inappropriate flirtations.

(Difficult to find anyone who hasn‘t been tagged, but of course anyone is welcome to join in.)

BarbaraBB Gorgeous cover 😍 5y
Graywacke @BarbaraBB 👍 and unexpected because I bought it through a paper catalog that didn‘t show the cover well. 5y
BarbaraBB I like it so much when that happens! 5y

Reading these beautifully strange stories was a lovely way to close out my time in South Korea.

kgriffith I was so confused for a minute then looked it up and saw that this is a re-release date for Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl. I‘ll have to wish AL a happy book re-birth day, I‘m taking Queer and Trans Writing with them this semester and Thursday is our last class meeting 😊 6y

I loved these stories! Dark and weird, about everyday life in Seoul, with characters who suffer and work hard and try to get by, usually failing. Seong-nan is a fantastic writer.
