This one was fun and serious both: a lightly humorous take on the serious business of race and identity in America.

I‘ve been quiet here lately, mostly because I‘ve been traveling. My husband taught a class in Rome, and my 6yo and I got to go along. It was amazing. Here are some of the books I bought there, although my luggage is missing, so many of these are not actually in my possession at the moment :( Hopefully they arrive today.

batsy Oh no! I hope your luggage (and these amazing books contained within) turn up very soon. 5mo
RebeccaH @batsy thank you, they showed up a couple hours ago! Yay, reunited with my books!! 5mo

I really liked this! It‘s all about depression and suicidal thoughts, so it‘s not for everyone, but the protagonist was fascinatingly difficult and interesting, and I liked the narratorial voice.

CHINA DREAM—This book is so good! It‘s a short novel about a man high in the Chinese governmental bureaucracy who is losing his mind because of memories of political violence from decades ago. It‘s harsh and infuriating devastating. Out in May.

I loved this meandering, thoughtful, strange book about art and artists. It‘s set in Buenos Aires and is narrated by a woman who is an art critic and who tells us stories from her life and from the lives of artists she loves. It‘s weird and great.

I finished this one last night — so good! It felt as much like an essay collection as a memoir, which was fine. It‘s about Madden‘s childhood and early adulthood in Florida, and about her family — a fascinating bunch. The writing is heart wrenching and wonderful.

I liked this a lot! I listened to the audio, read by the author, and it was good, but she‘s a slow reader and that might not work for some people. But the book was great and her voice was good company. Interesting observations on race, age, and the art world.

suzisteffen Slow readers are why we have variable audio listening speeds. 😂 Looking forward to this one! (In print.) 8mo

I loved these stories! Dark and weird, about everyday life in Seoul, with characters who suffer and work hard and try to get by, usually failing. Seong-nan is a fantastic writer.

What to say about this...it‘s about loss and about sexual exploration. About love and desire and family. The protagonist loses her father and this story is told alongside what happens when she meets her neighbor, a dominatrix. It‘s very interior, with lots of contemplation. I liked it!

I really liked this! It gets dark toward the end, but it‘s partly about the Iranian revolution of 1979, so that‘s expected. Really, it‘s about a family and their history and how that history has shaped their present. It‘s beautiful and its characters are memorable.
